Major vacuum leak? Do vacuum test. Clean
injectors and check fuel filter. Check timing
too.

Spitting and sputtering like not getting fuel

It may have fouled your plugs, but you can tke them out and clean them. Use a small blade and scrape the carbon off.
You could also take the egr valve off and try to clean it. Use a wire brush. also clean as best you can the passages under the valve, they can get plugged with carbon. Use a new gasket when you bolt the egr valve back down. Keep trying to get the fuel filter off, but the egr cleaning should help.

Follow the number 4 cylinder spark plug wire back to that ignition coil.
Verify that the wiring is getting voltage approx 12 volts with key on and that ground is good
Make sure that the wiring going to that coil is not corroded, broken pins or breaks in wiring

Van Sputters And Loses All Power When I Accelerate

Internal combustion engines requires 3 things... fuel, air, and spark. You do not have enough of one or more of these. If the wires and plugs are old, change them.  Air filter, same thing.  Fuel filter can also clog up with stuff after awhile. When you take a look at the air filter check where the air comes from.  It is possible a little critter has built a home and blocked the air flow (rare, but, it has happened).

Eng. shakes spits/sputters oil in spark plugs

I just had this fixed on my suby today. The cause is that the spark plugs, go through the valve covers on the 2.5 l .When the o rings in the cover go, the result is oil in the spark plugs. The cost of the repair in Canada was about $500 including diagnostics as well as new plugs and wires About 1.5 hours labor and new seals and gaskets. It now runs like new. This is a common problem for this subaru engine as well as for the dodge neon.
