Let it run with the choke for a while. There may be buildup in the cylinders that needs to be burnt out. In order to do that you need to let it get hot. Try very slowly opening the choke after its been running a while. Listen to the engine and if it sounds like its about to die, close the choke. You may also need to use starter fluid, it burns very hot and clean. You can pick it up at your local auto parts store. You may need to spray it into the carb the first few times to get it started.

I have a Briggs & Stratton 2 cylinder motor Model # 42A707-125201. Runs fine at high speed with the choke off, but it will not idle smoothly unless the choke is partially on (about 2/3). I rebuilt...

The fact the choke must be 2/3 applied to obtain a smooth idle indicates not enough fuel is being supplied by the carb at idle speed. Applying the choke richens the air/fuel ratio.

I suggest you revisit the carb idle air/fuel jets, air passages and any adjustments as well as checking for intake air leaks.

10 hp b&s engine will not run with choke open

Sounds like your carb needs rebuilt .This condition is caused by blockage of ports and jets in the carb .Running a fuel stabilizer will help prevent this .

Need carburetor adjustment

I had a similar problem with my 23 hp briggs. While cleaning the carb I found that the great gas we get today had eaten the seal around one of the jets in the throttle body causing it to fall out. Replaced the jet and now runs like a champ. Hope this helps.
