I have a 1999 4 cyl Toyota Camry with 98,000 miles. I had a problem with rough idling (sputtering)when I was in reverse---got the IAC valve replaced at the dealer $$$$$....seemed fine. Now 2 months later it is back--- a little different--now it runs rough(sputters) at stops--almost sounds like it will die, hasn't yet.....if I put it in neutral it revs--seems to miss fire immediately after leaving stop then smooths out--no check engine light---any ideas..I hate to have to go to the dealer...$150 just to diagnose...

Should be set screw at throtlle.

Have you checked base fuel pressure, and does the ticking sound like a valve ?

hello, this may be due to a sticking idle air control valve, it's a common problem, the throttle body has to be removed to get the IAC valve off, it can be leaned but it's best to replace it, clean it using a carbon remover like intake cleaner or carb cleaner using a brush, clean the carbon out, if it's sticking replace it, also clean the inside of the throttle body.

4CYL or V6?? Clean/Replace your IAC valve as this will cause rough/erratic idles(may happen intermittedly). IAC valve motor possibly sticking due to dirt and carbon build-up. I also recommend a full tune-up, including air filter, and intake cleaning if this hasn't been done recently. Hopefully this helps....

4cyl or V6?? Start at cleaning/replacing the IAC valve(idle air control valve),MAF sensor(V6 only) and cleaning the intake. At this time, I recommend replacing the air filter and sparkplugs(if not done recently). The IAC valve may be dirty or defective causing rough, low, or no idle. hopefully this helps

Clean the IAC. Disconnect throttle body air hose and you will see a hole on the bottom of the throttle body just before the butterfly valve. Spray throttle body cleaner down the IAC hole and then let it soak about 1/2 hour. Reconnect hose and run engine about a minute and then repeat this process 2 or more times. Toyota engines from 1997-2005 commonly have the IAC get cruded up with carbon as early as 35,000 miles. This is a sImple and cheap repair that many repair shops don't want you to know.
