Question about Yamaha XJ 650 Motorcycles

1 Answer

The neutral light does not turn on when the ignition is on. The bike does not start. Does anyone have a wire diagram for this bike? NOTE: It is for a XJ550 Yamaha Maxim, the option was not available from the list of models.

Ive got a 1997 suzuki marauder and wvery thing is woking but no neutral light and not starting but will turn over if u jump the starter seliond it has a new battery

Ok the starter circuit relies on the bike being n neutral to start a unless you pull in the clutch as there is a switch on it.if the switch is faulty or not connected it won't start if the neutral light is not on.the neutral switch works like this.
there is a small brass sprung loaded plunger in the end of the gear selector drum which turns around when you change gear.when in neutral the plunger rubs on a switch face and send an earth up to the neutral bulb ,the other wire on the bulb goes to an ignition live wire so as so on as its earthed it competes the circuit and the bulb lights up.so if it don't work it's either a blown bulb, faulty neutral switch, bad earth wire from the switch which is near the front sprocket or no live feed from the ignition when it's turned on.

1990 SR250 Yamaha with no ignition light

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Neutral light bulb burnt out.
2. Faulty neutral switch.
3. A loose bulb in the socket.
4. Faulty wiring from the neutral switch to the light.
5. Grounded neutral light circuit.

Hi there pete moss here from portsmouth. my zrx 1100 will not turn over from the start switch, ive shorted out the starter relay and the bike will turn over. should there be a spark at the plugs because...

Pete...
most newer bikes have safety interlocks....I'm more familiar with Yamaha than Kawasaki...but here goes...

First since the bike won't crank normally and has no igntion sounds like an interlock issue.
Ensure the engine kill switch is in the RUN position...rock it off and on to verify.

Is your neutral light operational....even if the bike is in neutral...if the neutral indication circuit doesn't detect it, you cannot crank starter with sidestand down. Try restart with sidestand up...and clutch lever pulled in.

Starting fault

There are two safety switches that you may need to test. 1) Neutral safety switch- this switch is what tells the bike that it's in neutral and allows the starter to engage. 2) Kickstand safety switch- this switch will not allow the bike to run in gear if the kickstand is down. My initial guess is the neutral safety switch. If the neutral safety switch is bad, then you will not be able to start the bike with the kickstand down because the bike thinks that it's in gear (even if in neutral). This also may explain why the initial intermitent problem of not starting when warm since the metal contacts will expand and possibly not make contact when warmed up. Are you trying to start the bike with the kickstand up or down? If it were the kickstand safety switch, the bike would probably start okay and then die when you put it in gear.

My karizma bike will not start....please help

  • Start with a new spark plug. Do you see spark? If not, check the side stand kill switch. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. If broken or out of adjustment, it would kill the spark. Check for a broken wire at the side stand switch and coupler. Try moving the kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it.
  • Check the fuses. How good is the battery? Try a jump start from your car battery. Is the handlebar kill switch on?
  • Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter. Check the wiring harness. Did a wire come unplugged? Are all wires clean and with solid connections? Any abraded or pinched wires? Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral switch wire on center casing. If still no spark, get CDI system and coils checked at the dealers shop.
  • Got gas and is it turned on? Clean air filter?
  • Drain the float bowl, it may be filled with water condensation.
  • carb, head and intake manifold mounted tight?
  • Have dealer check the CCVI system (Carb Controlled Variable Ignition).

Yamaha trx850 bike stopped then restarted no problem following week stopped again this time would not restart--no spark at all been in bike shop for 2 weeks they cant find anything wrong

If they find nothing wrong then the problem is obviously intermittent and can be very hard to find. Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter. Check the wiring harness. Did a wire come unplugged? Are all wires clean and with solid connections? Any abraded or pinched wires? Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral wire connection.

The usual source of intermittent loss of spark is the side stand kill switch. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. Check for a broken wire at the switch or coupler. Get a service manual and check out the electrical section. Some bikes have a diode controller integrated into the turn signal relay. Try moving the kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it. If that doesn’t work, check out the relay. The dealer would / should have load tested the various ignition components. I will assume the ignition system is okay. Check the battery and fuses. Install a new set of stock spark plugs.

    No power

Check the fuses. Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter. You should be getting power into and out of the switch.
Check the wiring harness. Did a wire come unplugged? Are all wires clean and with solid connections? Any abraded or pinched wires? Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral switch wire on center casing.

I have a YFM 200 (four wheeler) and am getting no spark. Have changed the plug, it turns over well, where do I go now? I have a 1986 version. Sorry, can't find this under "choose product category", but...

Check the fuses. Next, check for spark but with a new spark plug. How good is the battery? "Some juice" does not always translate into having enough juice for a spark. Fill the battery cells with water covering the battery plates. Jump start from your car battery. Is the kill switch on? Does the side stand have a kill switch? Is it working properly? Tip-over kill switch on your bike? Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter.

Check the wiring harness. Did a wire come unplugged? Are all wires clean and with solid connections? Any abraded or pinched wires? Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral switch wire on center casing. If still no spark, get CDI system and coils checked at the dealers shop.
