Question about 2005 Yamaha YZF-R6

1 Answer

2005 Yamaha YZF R6 I lifted my gas tank to change the air filter with an OEM filter and my bike has never ran the same since. Backfires, sputters, sounds aweful, no power like it use to. Since then I have changed gas many times, added fuel injector cleaner, sea foam, changed spark plugs and nothing has cured it. Double and triple checked many times over that all hoses are connected and in proper place. I dont have a few hundred bucks to blow on having a mechanic look at it. Does anyone have suggestions on what might be causing this? Thinking coil? or ECU? Im lost.

Tried that too already took it down the street with the complete air box off and still no solution

  • karl_legier May 29, 2011

alright, this is what happened today, (just got off work) I was told that you can feel the headers right after you crank it up from a cold engine and feel which header pipe isn't as hot as the others. Well, number 3 header was colder than the others. The other 3 I couldn't touch after 10 seconds. So, this is suppose to suggest that the 3rd cylinder is not get the fire. From either a coil or a plug. So I moved the coil to the 2nd cylinder waited till the headers got cold again and started it back up. Now the 2nd cylinder is the colder one. So its GOTTA be a coil? So now Im going to buy a new coil and see if it's the problem. I'll post back when this will happen. Other than that I'll take more suggestions and help.

Does you air filter require oiling before use??? Take the fliter off all together and give it a little zap up the street and see if it makes a difference, if it does than you know it is the air filter!!

What about the fuel tank itself, i am not sure how your model is set up but when you moved the tank is it possible the dirt may have partially blocked the fuel line or even the carbys/injectors (not sure of your model). I know with the older models you can remove the tap located directly on the tank, this has a gauze type filter which very rarely is checked or cleaned, sorry i cannot be too specific but it might be worth a look especially if it started playing up after the tank was removed!!
