Question about 2003 Suzuki GSX 750 F (Katana)

1 Answer

2003 Suzuki Katana 750 sat around for 2 years with Sta-Bil in the tank. It started up on a new battery & choke, but won't idle & immediately dies. With the choke pulled it surges up & down. Siphoned out the old gas & it came out brown. Adding new fuel didn't help. I've stripped everything off the carbs & drained them but can find nothing wrong from the outside. Is there crud in the float bowls or is the problem electronic?

Found several carburetor boot clamps that were loose. Will tighten them up, put the machine back together, fire it up & see if it runs better. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

Yes there can be expired fuel on the bowl. You may want to clean it thoroughly as a first course of action. Please do check and replace the spark plugs and plug wires too for they can be worn out which may cause irregularities on current supply.

If the problem still persists, please do check the vacuum lines too. If you have disconnected or worn out vacuum hoses you'll have vacuum leakage. If that's the case, please have it replaced to resolve the issue. Wish you all the best on this and hope to get your bike back to it's normal running operation.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

89 f150 will start but after choke let's idle down it dies or if you even touch the gas. It had sat up for 5 years but the first time I got it started it drove for over an hour.

The damage is already done. Gasoline breaks down within 1 year. Drain and flush the old fuel out of the gas tank(s). Try adding Chevron Techron fuel injection cleaner to the replacement gas. That may work. However, you probably need to remove all the fuel injectors [if it's a fuel injected engine] and have them sent out to be professionally [ultrasonic] cleaned and tested. Fords are notorious for fuel injector problems. Also do a fuel system pressure test, as the bad gas may have damaged the electric fuel pump [located in the fuel tank(s). For a carbureted engine, you will need to have the carburetor overhauled or replaced with a rebuilt unit. NEVER let a vehicle sit unused for more than 6 months without first treating the gasoline. I always add a fuel stabilization product like Sta-Bil to the fuel, if the engine will not be run for at least 2 months or more. Adding these products after the fuel has gone bad [is already old] will not help. Then it's to late. Below is a link for Sta-Bil. I've used this product for over 20 years. It will save a LOT of grief, when storing vehicles or gas powered lawn equipment. See

Add some sea foam in the gas tank. Leave in idle run for about 5 to 7 minutes. Then idle the rpms up and watch the white smoke choke out. Which will clean or attempt to clean the throttle body out

Engine dies when choke set to center

The jets and/or tiny openings are clogged in your carburetor. You can try cleaning by taking off the carb, removing the bottom bowl and spraying out with carb cleaner (follow directions). You can also try to add a cleaner to you gas tank and allowing it to clean the carb while mowing (I have had some success using his method, but it *may* work). I would call your local small engine repair shop and ask their opinion of which product to use. If it works, they're a hero for suggesting, if not they will get a job overhalling your carb (but it will probably prove to be less expensive to buy a new carb).

As all gasoline now has ethanol in it, you MUST use a product like Sta-Bil (I like Sta-Bil Marine as it's more cost effective) to keep gum from forming. (Theres a lot of problems with ethanol gas, water separation, gum formations, etc).
Here's a reference to Amazon:

Unfortunately there's no simple fix, it's a common problem and it will not fix itself (only get worse if not corrected).

Hi Michael, for this situation I would consider using a carburetor dipping solution that your dealer should sell or you can purchase at an auto parts store and for more information about your question please visit the website below. Good luck and have a nice day.

What is the recommended method for cold starting of this bike after a storage period of 2 months...what position of choke, etc....I have no kickstart, just battery ignition.

First of all, check, if the oil is now way fuller than before - if you left the petcock on PRI the gearbox is now full with a gaz-oil-mix! You need an oilchange. (and check the airfliter of excess gaz, too)
Recharge the battery.
Now, if that's ok, (petcock always on ON), pull out the choke and start the motor.
2 month is not very long, should be fine, especially when you put Sta-Bil in the gaz tank before winter.

I am borrowing my father-in-law's chainsaw. He is only here in the summer. I used his pre-mixed gas from last summer. It started well and ran super for about 20 minutes and then it faded, like short of...

sounds like the carburetor's getting plugged up. First, sta-bil doesn't burn that great, so you may want to dump it and start over. If the fuel has already sat for that long, sta-bil won't help it anyways. You want to start with fresh gas, with the proper mixture. If that doesn't solve it, you can look at the wide open mixture screw and see if you can tune it better.
