The most common answer you will receive for this question is more than likely check and clean your pilot jet and pilot circuit with compressed air and new pilot jet ideally. I must confess in most cases this does apply except the last 3 rebuilds I have done on 400, 426 and a 450 YZ exactly the same problem where hard to start and when started only wanted to run with choke on they all ended up being leaking intake valves
Best option if you can is clean pilot circuit replace pilot jet - Then double check your valve clearances (sometimes to tight can leave the intake valves hanging open when meant to be closed) then if still no joy, Do a leak down test or get your local shop to do leak down test - The leak down test will save you a lot of frustration diagnosing internal issues. Just to clarify don't pay too much attention to the percentage loss of the test just do the test to confirm if there is a leak or not.
good luck - Regards Jamie

Won stay running

Needs a carb adjustment, cleaning, or possible rebuilt. Try adding a little seafoam and running at half choke for about 5 mins or longer this may clean it up nicely. also check the spark plug.

Gas Trimmer will not stay started

Many times with a gas mix, after sitting for a while, the mix separates and gums up the carb. Taking the carb off and soaking it overnight in a parts or carb cleaner and running carb cleaner through the tank and gas lines will cure this.

I have a Ryobi 780r that won't run unless it is on choke. The moment I remove the switch from choke to run it shuts off.

This means you have an air leak somewhere adding more air than fuel with the choke off. With the choke on it blocks off the fresh air coming in and mixes with the maverick air from the air leak. You need to find the leak and fix it or you may damage the unit

Replaced all fuel lines and pickup fuel filter. but won't stay running without choke.

Take the carburetor off and clean it and check and replace any air filters you may have. Can't say that this will fix it ,but it is a starting point for you. Hope it works and good luck.

Crafsman 25cc weedwacker won't stay running

You probably have a bad hose or a bad hose connection that is sucking mostly air instead of delivering full fuel to the carburetor!

Engine starts but won't continue to run. Choke doesn't stay closed after starting. will stay running only if I hold choke closed manually.

let it warm up with choke closed manually after it starts to stall with choke closed open it and dont let it stall u can learn to play with the choke a little to get it to run right GOOD LUCK!

Mower starts and runs but has no power acts like its flooding it burns a lot more gas can barley pull it self

Sounds like maybe the choke is stuck closed. If you remove the air filter the choke is the first butterfly valve you can see. The throttle looks similar but is a inch or so deeper into the carb, and you can't see that unless the choke is open. Try removing the air filter and starting the mower. It might run just a little better without the air filter since it will get a bit more air, but if the choke is stuck it still won't run right. But you will be able to see if that's the problem right off. If it runs great without the air filter, and the choke is not stuck, then the problem is a clogged air filter and you need to replace it. Good luck, Al K

Ryobi CS30 Trimmer starts and runs in full choke and half choke but stumbles and stalls on run. Not up to full rpms when in full choke and half choke....

You probably need a slight carburetor adjustment. Try to turn the L mixture screw (the one near the bottom of the carburetor on the air filter side, closest to the engine) 1/8 to 1/4 of a turn counterclockwise. These mixture adjustment screws ( L and H) have odd heads on them and conventional tools won't turn them. I use an automotive type plastic wire connector (around 22 gauge) with a ring terminal end which I can hold. Tap the plastic end of the wire terminal connector onto the head of the screw with a small hammer and this will enable you to adjust the L screw. This adjustment will increase you high speed side and possibly allow it to run off choke in a regular manner.
