  • One of two or both things are happening.
  1. That starter relay is stuck closed and your hearing the voltage arc in the relay. Replace the relay.
  2. But first before replacing the relay check the battery for proper voltage. If you arched that battery you may have ruined it. Should read 12 volts. If not charge it a bit and give another try. An auto parts store can give it a load teat for free and tell you if it is bad despite voltage as 12 volts does not always = good battery.
  3. So first check the battery voltage with a multi-meter. Then take the battery to have it tested. This will prevent buying a relay that may not be be necessary. If the battery tests good both ways then the relay must be replaced.

Yamaha 2002 kodiak 4 wheeler wont start replaced starter relay but makes a buzzing noise when u press the starter

Had a similar problem with my Kawasaki and it turned out to be the relay that had stopped working. I removed the relay by undoing the 2 cables attached to it. Be careful not to allow the cables to touch the frame as one is connected directly to the battery. With the ignition on and everything ready to start the bike, touch the 2 cables together and see if the starter motor turns over (it might even fire up). CAUTION: only do this momentarily as the wiring of the starter motor may burn out if the 2 cables are left together too long. If the starter turns over the relay is faulty and can easily be replaced. Hope this helps, Steve.

04 roadglide want start. Replaced battery, now i here a clicking noise by the starter when i press start button.

Hi Anonymous, first when checking anything in the starter circuit you must make sure the battery connections are clean and tight especially the negative cable at both ends and has a 12.5 volt or better charge. It must not fall below 9 volts during the cranking procedure with a volt meter hooked up. If it does fall below 9 volts do a proper load test on the battery and replace if necessary. Second replace the starter relay cheap $6 and make sure it's well grounded and getting 11.5 volts or better to activate. Third remove the back cover of the starter solenoid and de-arc/refurbish the contact plate and shoes making sure they are tight. If it still chatters replace the solenoid. Good luck and have nice day.

1994 ford escort won't turnover, the fuel shutoff light comes on when you press the clutch. can push start and will run

soundsa like the starter or the fender mounted solioid is malfunctioning. Does anytrhing clich as you turn the key to start? If theirs no click at all you might look and the starter relay ( solioid) it's located near the battery and it has the positive battery cable connected to it. Also notice the most common no start is the battery cables aren't making good connection to the battery or the battry is too low as it may be low on charge. Have the battry tested or if handy to do see if it starts normally with jumper cables connected to a running car. If it starts just fine the battery or the charging system needs to be looked into. it it tris to start and crnks slowly and makes bad noises the starter is likly bad. If it had been starting just fine and this happened all the sudden the cables connected to the battery or the battery failing are the most likly.

I have a 1982 Kawasaki z550 that I am trying to get started I am I was getting arcing from a starter relay so I have replaced it placed a 12V supply to the battery terminals still arcing. Engine will not...

IT,S SOUNDS TO ME THAT THE ENGINE COULD BE SIEZED UP OR LOCKED , REMOVE SPARK PLUGS PUT BIKE IN GEAR AND PUSH THE BIKE SLOWLY WITH A LENGTH OF WOODEN DOWL OF THE OF THE RIGHT SIZE DOWN THE PLUG HOLE IF THE DOWL MOVES UP AND DOWN THEN THE PISTONS ARE MOVING FREELY IN THE BORE.
ALSO DISCONECT MAIN CABLE TO STARTER MOTOR DOES THE ARCING STOP? IF SO STARTER BUTTON COULD BE STUCK ON INTERNALLY AS IF YOU WERE PRESSING OR THE STARTER MOTOR HAS AN INTERNAL SHORT TO EARTH, WHILE THE CABLE IS OFF THE STARTER TAKE A LENGTH OF CABLE FROM THE BATT POSITIVE {MAKE SURE THE BIKES IN NEUTRAL} AND TOUCH MAIN STARTER POSTIVE DOES IT TURN THE ENGINE? IF SO THEN YOU HAVE A CABLE ON BIKE GOING DOWN TO EARTH THIS WILL CAUSE YOUR ARCING ,WIRING WITH AGE WILL BECOME BRITTLE AND CRACK AND TRACK DOWN TO EARTH .. I HOPE THIS HAS BEEN USEFUL GOOD LUCK { FROM AN AUTO ELECTRICIAN ]

Bike won't start, new Harley battery, and starter bike 2006 FLHX Street Glide, all I get is a clicking noise from solenoid under seat

I'm not too familiar with the later model bikes but if I were getting a clicking noise under the seat and the bike was not starting, I'd investigate the source of the noise. It's possible that it is a starter relay that engages the solenoid that is an integral part of the starter. Look at the starter from the right hand side of your bike. You'll see a single small wire that connects to the end of the starter just above the end plate of the solenoid. Disconnect this wire and connect a test light or volt meter to the wire. Turn on your ignition switch and press the start button. You should hear the click under the seat and see voltage at the end of that wire. If not, replace the relay, a plastic cube about an inch in dimension.

Good Luck
Steve

See if the motor turns freely by hand to make sure it isn't seized or otherwise jammed. It could be that 1st gear is too low to get the motor turning while you try to push start; you coulsd try 2nd gear. If the motor isn't jammed up, check the electrical connections from the battery and pay special attention to the ground. If the battery is good and the connections all prove to be good, you either have a bad starting relay or bad starter motor.

2001 cbr 929 bike makes a clicking noise when i try to start it?

And it doesn't start? The clicking sound is the starter relay (aka starter solenoid). If the battery is fully charged and all you hear is the relay clicking, then you've got either a defective relay, a bad starter motor, or faulty wiring between those two.
Most likely, it is a bad relay. To find out, locate the relay and use a large screwdriver to bridge across the two large cables that are bolted to the top of it. If the starter spins the engine when you do this - then you've definitely got a bad relay. If the starter does not spin, then it's either the starter motor or a bad cable connection going to it.
