The electronic ignition unit is a compact unit located in the timer cavity on the right side of the engine. Drill the two rivets out that holds the cover plate on and remove the plate. Be careful when you do this as you want to drill just enough to get the head of the rivet off. Once the outer plate is removed, there's another plate held on by two screws, remove this. Now you can see the timer unit. Mark the timer unit and the inside of the timer cavity so that you can put the new unit in the exact same position as the old unit was. Make sure you make the mark so that you can mark the new ignition unit the same way. You'll have to unpin the plug on the end of the wires to get it out of the small hole in the bottom of the timer cavity. You must disassemble the plug to do this. You'll need to verify the advanced timing by removing the timing plug on the side of the engine directly above the timer cavity using a timing light. Do not get your eyes in front of the open hole with the engine running. A lot of oil saturated engine pressure comes out of the hole and it will blow this into your eyes. Rev the engine to about 2000 rpm, shine the light into the hole and look for the advanced timing mark. Connect the trigger lead of the timing light to the front cylinder plug wire. If the timing is not correct, loosen the stanchion screws and rotate the timing unit to get the timing right. Clockwise rotation advances the timing.

Good Luck
Steve

Gas oven/elec start glow plug comes on and remains on, gas burner does not light

I am not familiar with this unit but first I would see if gas is flowing, if so I would go with the glow plug, or can you switch with another burner. Normally you need a flame to turn off the igniter.

No spark in first cylinder

I once had a Daytona Twin Tec ignition module, and one day it just started firing on one cylinder.
This is the default if it got too hot.
However, for me that wasn't the case, it was just bad unit.

2003 harley 1200 sportster won't start when warm tuns over no spark just changed coil no difference starts right away when cold

Hi Curtis, the CKP sensor needs compression to send correct signal to the ICM/ECM, make sure both spark plugs are in heads and use a grounded third plug to check for spark or hold spark plug cable close to spark plug in head. If still not getting spark the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Battery voltage below 8.7 volts, loose or broken battery cables especially ground cable to frame.
3. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
5. Faulty ignition coil or ignition / electronic module
6. Failed CKP, CMP, MAP or BAS sensor.
7. Faulty ignition switch.
8. Security alarm failing to disarm.
For a prime suspect please visit the website below and good luck.

I need a wiring diagram for a 2002 883 harley sportser

If you are going to install a new ignition unit, all you basically need to know is which wire is the "HOT" wire. Disconnect all the wires to the coil, turn the ignition switch on and use a test light to find the "power" wire. Once you know which wire this is, you'll need the wiring schematic for the particular type of ignition unit you're installing on your bike. Usually, if you got the website for the manufacturer, they'll have "installation instructions" under their "Technical" section. Usually, with a dual fire ignition system, there are only three wires to hook up. Good Luck!

Distributor shaft run-out with point system

I'm a bit confused here. The 1979 Sportster didn't have a distributor. I think 1969 was the last year that Sportsters had a distributor in them. On a '79 model, the first year that had the electronic ignition system, it was quite common to see them converted back to points type ignition. The original electronic system was unreliable and often failed. It was much more expensive to repair the electronic system than it was to replace it with an older points type system.

With that being said, most all the early Sportsters as well as the Big Twins had another weak point in their ignition system, the mechanical advance unit that is behind the breaker plate. The pivots for the fly wieghts will wear out and cause the ignition system not to return to it's proper retarded timing. It is best to simply replace the entire unit. Make sure you get one with the needle bearings in the flyweights. These will last a pretty good while. The standard unit will usually start to give problems within about two years if you ride very much. Before you take the breaker plate out of your bike, make sure you mark it so you can get it back in nearly the same position once you replace the mechanical advance unit. It would still be advisable to check the ignition timing once you get the point back in and set.

Sportster 4 not working...

I had the same issue. This is what Sirius calls a "Frozen Unit". There is no bypass, unfortunately, and it must be returned.

I had mine for 3 days and it froze on the Sirius Logo screen when booting up. If you bought the unit from Sirius, you must contact their E-Commerce department. If bought from a retailer, take it back to the store.

Sorry, mate.
