You have to take the primary cover off and take the small bolt that holds the jackshaft to the starter out.

Good Luck

Harley starter bendix problem softail 2002

Hi Daniel, it sounds the like starter drive/clutch has gone south, it has components inside, that when spinning, centrifugal forces cause them to grab or lock into permanently fixed counterparts. The gear only spins one way and locks the other way. If you have one that spins both ways it makes a noise like the starter is just spinning, it has failed and needs to be replaced. Diagnosing starter problems with 1995 heritage softail classic won't start, charged battery- now no power when I turn ignition on

Hi Anonymous, and the usual suspects are:
1.Ignition/Light Key Switch not in IGNITION position.
2.Engine Stop switch in the OFF position.
3.Discharged battery, loose or corroded connections (solenoid chatters).
4. Bank Angle Sensor tripped and Ignition/Light Key Switch not cycled to Off and then back to Ignition
5. Starter control circuit, relay or solenoid faulty.
6. Electric starter shaft pinion gear not engaging or over-running clutch slipping.

2008 hertige softail classic. Transmission problem. Sounds like a tapping or maybe marbles popping around. Someone suggested that a specific bolt may have come loose. Wondering how difficult it would be to...

I'm afraid that there is nothing simple about a transmission on your bike. The only thing that I can think of that would cause that is a loose front belt drive pulley. If this is the case, you must remove the entire primary drive from your Softail. This involves removing the engine sprocket, clutch, and starter. Then you'll need some special tools to remove and reinstall the front pulley. Check the final drive belt for a stone stuck on the inside of it between the "teeth" of the belt.

Good Luck
