You would need to go to Yamaha dealer for this age bike I think? - I sell them but generally for 1999 models or newer Don't be surprised when they ask you for about $90 Aud for it (they are an expensive essential tool) unfortunately !

How do i remove starter clutch on a 1977 yamaha xs 400d? does it require any pullers,if so what type? thanks

You will need to remove the alternator rotor(LH side of the engine) which requires a special tool. You can attempt to bribe your local Yamaha service centre mechanic but I doubt you'll have much luck. Using a gear puller is not recommended as it could damage the rotor. The correct tool screws into the middle of the rotor to seperate it from the crankshaft.

When trying to start my 1983 Honda 750 v-twin, it sounds like gears grinding, it just started doing this, what could it be if not the starter? I had a friend take the starter out, he said it was still...

The starter clutch is the problem. It is located on the back side of the alternator rotor. You need a special puller to remove the rotor without breaking it. Once you get the rotor off the starter clutch is bolted to the back of it.

Carburetor on yamaha xj700 maxim x

Actually, they're not Hitachi carbs. Since you have a 1985 "Maxim-X", the model number is actually XJ700XN. The XJ700 does indeed have Hitachi carbs but your bike, the XJ700XN Maxim-X has BS33 Mikuni carbs.

Careful with the model number, the XJ700 and the XJ700X are entirely different bikes.

By the way, if you want more answers about your Maxim-X, feel free to visit the "Maximum Maxim-X" web site at www.maxim-x.com and the lesser known FTP site for the Maximum Maxim-X web site at www.maxim-x.com/pix

THE FLY WHEEL WONT TURN WHEN I TRY TO START THE BIKE IS THE STRARTER CLUTCH BEHIND THE FLY WHEEL WORN. IS IT A BIG JOB TO REMOVE THE FLY WHEEL

It is not a big job if you know what to do and you have a rotor puller. But you may likely cause big $ damage if you don't.
The "starter clutch" is on the end of the starter motor and when activated turns an idler cog, which then turns the clutch starter set. This clutch starter set is behind the magneto rotor (flywheel) and should not be the problem. To remove the rotor you will require an appropriate size rotor puller available from most larger bike accessories stores for under $20, or the Suzuki Special Tool for 10x the price!
Your problem most likely lies with the starter clutch pack itself and is a parts replacement item.
The link below will provide by exploded view, diagrams of the parts you need to check, at least you can have an idea when you talk to your parts dealer. Cheers.
