Question about 2003 Harley Davidson FLHR Road king

1 Answer

Steve: I have really messed up now, on pulling the dip stick that is in the right rear (just inside of the passengers foot rest) i mis-read the oil level so added a quart of oil there and now the oil level shows way above full, So, I attempted to drain off a quart by removing a drain plug ( ( a 5/8 ths hex nut) which is located in what appears to be the right rear of the center of three pans. I got about an even quart from this location and didn't lower the oil level at all in the dipstick. Now what did I drain? How do I replace it and how do I lower the level of oil on the dip stick. please bail me out again AER

I think you drained your tranny, Harley uses a oil tank that holds the oil the drian for that is a tube that runs down the bottom of the bike from the bag. if you look at the rh side of the bike ( what you put oil in) you will see the oil tank look on the bottom of that and follow the tubes one will go almost stright down thats your drain you can drop your oil there. you need to check you tranny oil. there will be a dip stick on the rh side of the tranny, if in fact you drained it you can fill it in the dip stick whole. if you have any qustions jkust let me know.

I have a 99 jeep it started acting crazy and checked the oil the dip stick said it was bone dry so I put 3 quarts in it and checked the oil again and this time it was about 3 quarts to much

my guess is you used the wrong dip stick,
i cant watch you mess up. so....no jeep stated a 99 what?
wrangler, Cherokee or grand Cherokee?
so i bet you have an automatic trans, right?
then pulled the dip stick on trans thinking its the engine
or the reverse. bad news if true.
rigth?
find someone that knows the difference or read the lost operators guide.

and error 2, the stick empty is not bone dry, not ever.
yes real low. so and 1/2 quart at a time , not 3 qt ever.
until the engine stick is at normal..

if this is a transmission, and you put engine oil in there
all hope is lost. and the method is hot running, to add ATF fluids.
unlike the engine method.
my best guess totally BLIND>

Transmission fill location.

The transmission and engine oil are together. Put the bike on the main stand. Sitting on the bike by your right foot there is a fill plug/cap to ad oil and below that there is a dip stick. Turn the dipstick counter clockwise to remove it. Now wipe it and stick it in (do not thread it in) pull it out and check it. If it needs oil add it. Also check the dill fluid level at the rear tire. Thanks Rod

Removing the oil dipstick. Is it screwed on?

No, the oil tank is on the bottom of the transmission. The oil dipstick it a long plastic dip stick on a knurled knob about 2" in diameter located on the right rear corner of the transmission. Check the oil with the bike on the Jiffy stand. There are two marks on the stick. The Upper mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is 'FULL COLD" do not overfill.

Go here and look at part # 189
http://www.bikebandit.com/2005-harley-davidson-touring-road-king-flhr/o/m18548#sch619685

The dipstick knob is held in by friction of an O-ring around the diameter of the knob. Just wiggle it while pulling upwards on it.

Good Luck
Steve

Want to learn how to check transmission fluid on my ford mustang 1994

At the rear of the engine locate the dip stick going into the transmission case, it look like an oil dip stick. Pull it out and wipe clean. Re-insert pull out and read the fluid level at the bottom of the dip stick. Do this with engine off and on a level surface.

Changint Oil on my 2001 Fatboy. Pulled drain plug and a half a cup of oil drained out. Pulled dip stick to see oil tank is still full. Disconnected drain line from tank leading to motor. Found it to be...

Sound like you pulled the wrong plug to me. The oil drain plug in under your bike. Look at the oil tank from the right side of your bike. Near the rear of the tank, there's a large hose that runs downward towards the rear of the transmission. It continues down and looks like it connects to a crossmember on the frame. If you'll look under that crossmember, you'll find a plug that uses an Allen wrench or hex key to remove.

Do not remove the oil line that goes from the tank to the engine. However, you said that you found it to be plugged. Plugged with what? If the oil infeed line got plugged, it's because something has gotten into the tank. Drain the tank and check to find out what is inside the tank.

Good Luck

Oil dip stick handle for Ford Focus ZX3 broke off. Rest of the dip stick still in the tube. How do I retrieve the remaining portion of the oil pan dip stick?

Drill small hole in what's left inside the tube - insert bolt extractor - pull out dip stick. Material is relatively soft so drilling is easy. Buy new dip stick.

When do I add Oil?

Really you should not have to add oil. But to find out have jeep on level surface and use the dip stick to check. Check with car off, pull dip stick out and wipe off and reinsert, Pull back out and read the stick only add if it is low. Do not over fill.

I have a 1992 yamaha xt 600.is it right that i have to check the engine oil in the frame with the dip stick while the engine is running . many thanks , steve taylor.

The engine oil in any engine is supposed to be checked with the engine stopped.
Better still is to have it rest for some time if its just back from a spin so as to allow the oil to settle down.

If it doesn't have a dipstick or a sight glass window on the kick starter side you will find a srew / bolt on the case usually lower front right near the rear foot brake unsrew that then put your oil in the filler hole when oil comes out of the hole you took the screw/bolt out of you are full I have an 01 and thats the way it is or 650cm of oil

2002 Trooper has trans leak low on floiud do I fill at rear

NO NO NO...IF ITS AUTOMATIC IT WILL HAVE A DIP STICK LIKE AN OIL DIP STICK. LOOK FOR IT THEN PULL IT OUT AND ADD. MAKE SURE THAT ITS LOW BY READING THE STICK EITHER IT WILL SAY COLD OR HOT. IF ITS BELOW COLD OR THE LINE THEN YOU WOULD NEED TO ADD. BUT REMEMBER IN ORDER TO HAVE ACCURACY ON READING THE DIP STICK U MUST HAVE THE CAR RUNNING IN PARK.
