Your engine is grounding through the clutch cable, causing the heat. This is not good. Check for proper engine ground to frame and battery.

Starter engages while the motor is running

Hi, William the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Some times when i try to start my bike. it will turn and not engage, i'll do it two or three times before it engages and starts

You may have a problem with the "over running" clutch in your starter. The way your starter works, the jackshaft must be fully extended and engaged with the ring gear on the outer clutch basket before the starter motor turns over. If the starter motor spins and the engine does not turn, it's the starter clutch (over running) clutch that is bad.

You can replace the clutch if you have the know how and tools and save some money. If you can't do the work yourself, you're better off replacing the entire starter. The labor time to disassemble, replace the clutch, and reassemble the starter will eat up any savings recognized from do it this way instead of simply replacing the starter. The labor time for the job will almost double but you can price it out to see which way is better.

Good Luck
Steve

Rattle and slippage when engaging clutch, only when hot after a ling ride. does not rattle or slip at all when clutch is fully engaged.

Clutch plates may be worn. You would have to pull the side cover to inspect them. Honda clutch's always rattle at an idle when in neutral. If you just pull in the clutch lever the rattle will go away. Let the lever out and it will rattle again. As for the slippage, if your clutch cable is binding at all it will keep the clutch from fully engaging when you release the handle. This will cause the clutch to slip for a second or two until the cable fully releases from the bind. Any resistance in the cable and you should replace it.

John Deere 318 blades won't engage once it gets hot.

Check the clutch gap in the front of the machine (the one that engages the belt) by tightening or loosening three lock nuts around clutch. Tightening decreases gap/ loosening increases gap. Note: do not tighten too far as it will result in clutch drag or lockup! Stop when its just starting to touch then back off slightly. Also without a proper charge on the battery the magnetic power for the clutch is altered and not strong enough to engage clutch when hot. Find out why battery light is on.

Replaced the starter in my 92 saab 900s clutch problem

hi,
gonna have to go back and study her. sounds like a short circuit involving the shifter linkage which is like an aircraft cable or more simply, ten speed brake cable. I say aircraft cable because saabs are more or less a fuselage without the wings, a good car. hang on to her. sounds like the problem started before you even touched her. study saab stuff on the net, recalls , and the like, sounds like some mechanical stuff got in the way of some electrical stuff, probably just from getting old, study it and see how the tranny shifts with a friend, or did , use a strong flashlight or droplight, youll figure it out if you have patience

Sterter will not engage when clutch is depressed

The bendix on your starter is bad, you need to replace the starter. That's a fuel injected car so if you had a voltage problem, you wouldn't be able to push start it. Replacing the starter should keep you from having to Flinstone the car.

Clutch problem on 1997 neon

It sounds like the clutch is slipping which means replacement. If the engagement occurs 3/4 of pedal travel it means that there is enough movement to fully compress the clutch plate. The plate must be worn severely. Get more than one estimate and they should include clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing. Good luck.
