SOURCE: 1999 road king wont start

Its your fuel pump if you can't hear it. And its inside your tank. Not a hard fix if you have a book that tells you how to remove it. Alot of procedures to follow to get it right. And yes it does work off a relay.

there is also a fuse block behind your left side case behind the tool kit box. remove the box and the is a fuse block with a 10 amp fuse for the fuel as well

It will have a fuel filter in the fuel line (should be easy to find) but does not have a fuel pump. Firstly i would check you have spark on all cylinders as this is the most likely thing to be going wrong. Once you are sure you have spark you can start trouble shooting fuel and air delivery problems.
To check for spark remove a sparkplug, insert it back into its HT lead. Place the threads of the sparkplug on the engine block and crank the engine. A strong blue spark should be visible.

Fuel problem


Hi Bill

Check the fuel pump wiring for power, if there is power going to the pump, I'd say the fuel pump malfunctioned and has to be removed from the fuel tank.

Fitted a new battery now it wont start fuel pump not priming


Sounds like the pump could be faulty or the fuse for it blown?
Check fuse first, if ok,check the wiring plug to pump , make sure it has power.
All that fails take out pump and test on bench see if faulty?

Bike wont start ran low on fuel drove home shut down the bike now it wont start. We have spark it must be fuel where is the fuel filter located


Hi Allan.

The fuel filters are located inside the fuel tank, attached to the fuel pump. You will need to remove the tank and to turn the tank upside down (after disconnecting fuel lines and bleeding) to access the filter and pump. The procedure below is taken from Kingpin and Vegas manual at page 103. I have uploaded the manual here:2180 Vic Kingpin-Vegas Manual. The fuel tank removal procedure is described in the manual from page 103. The fuel pump is reported as common failure in this bike. Use an hand gauge to read fuel pressure in lines, that may reveal if the pump is working.Check in general the fuel delivery system. Check the clutch safety switch (see p113 in manual), check if any additional fuel cutoff or kickstand switch has been installed.

I recently wrecked my bike on the right side slightly and now the electric start wont start. any suggestions?


When you say wont start, does your bike power on? And if so do you hear your fuel pump prime ( low brief whining sound )? if not it could very possibly be your tip over sensor. if that isnt the case check under your side fairing for a pinched/severed harness wire.

The bike cuts out when riding along. It won't restart for quite a while. While in this state when it wont restart, when the ignition is turned on, the fuel pump is heard priming away but wont stop. The...


I would check for air leaks on the input side and possibly the output side of the pump. Maybe try a new pump.
It sounds like it is pumping air not fuel.

Bike wont start unless we jumper the fuel pump


Even though the bike spins over well the battery's on CBR's have to be in tip top condition because the capacitor in the CDI will not release the pulse to fire the coils even though it seems well charged, does this only happen from cold and have you run your jump cables from the battery first as feeding power through the fuel pump will also back feed the battery.

Wont start


This bike is probably equipped with immobilizer system and you should have a red key along with two black ones.
That means that if the ECU does not detect the correct key code from the IC inside the key, it will neither give power to the fuel pump nor to the spark plugs.
The main key switch has a lot of wire in 2 groups.One big and one small (thin).Which wires did you jumped?

CB600 hornet, after about 10 miles the engine cuts out , wont restart until it tends to cool down and then is repeatable, any ideas, been told it could be a rectifier ?


check for a real good powerful bluish spark only when the bike will not start ...if you don't have the big bright bluish spark and you see a reddish purple spark instead, then i would start with the pulse generators. if your spark is healthy and you installed a new fuel filter, then i would check your fuel pump output...follow the line from the pump that leads to the filter and detach it put the fuel line into a small catch tank.... start bike, and see if fuel streams out, if it does, then you know your pump is working. so now we know we got good spark?, good air,(correct?),new fuel filter? (fresh gas?),and great fuel pumping.
(this bike should be running!) did you replace plugs and wires, because this is probably the cause.... also your coils could be overheating, spray them down and see if this help getting the bike stated quicker...get back to me i might have i might have a few other tricks. feedback please if it helps, Thanks
