Some of those bikes had a bunch of safety switches(read relays) that would go out for no other reason.than to make you really pissed off before you grabbed a hand full of throttle.
The ultimate solution for me and my Yamaha V was to wire the start button to the last relay. Going round the kickstand switch, the brake switch, the clutch switch and the neutral switch. Once the kickstand hits the back of your ankle or the bike jumps with the starter -- you just learned to be a better operator.
First to test the starter; open the handles of a plyers and arc across the big terminals on the starter solenoid. Be in neutral with key off !!!!!!! If starter runs- we are off to the safety switch solution.
So- Hook up a trouble light to your ground on the battery. Get a jumper from the hot side of the starter solenoid. and start going down the row of your safety solenoids. using the light on the output and the hot to activate it. Don't forget- they ground thu their sensor. So- you are testing the solenoid and it's switch(read sensor)- To activate -operate what ever safety devise it is protecting you from. Some where in there will be a dead or open solenoid.
