It sounds like the carb is jetted too lean. They come from the factory jetted as lean as possible in order to meet EPA emission regulations. I'd start by changing the slow speed jet. You need to go up ONE size of your slow speed jet. If your bike has a #48 slow speed jet in it, you need to go to the next larger jet, a #50. I'd also drill out the "anti-tamper plug" that covers the idle mixture screw so that I could adjust the idle mixture. You must be careful when you do this so you don't damage the brass idle screw that is hidden under the plug. Drill a small hole in the plug. Drill just enough deep enough to go through the plug. Thread a screw into the plug and pull the plug out exposing the idle mixture screw. When you get the engine started, adjust the screw to the highest, smoothest idle speed. You can also richen up the mid-range slightly by taking the top off the carb and removing the slide. Take the needle retainer out and remove the needle from the slide. Put a three millimeter flat washer that is about 0.020" thick on the needle from the long end. Use a small dab of grease to hold the washer on while you drop the needle back into the slide. This raises the needle by twenty thousandths enrichening the mid-range mixture just slightly. Replace the needle holder and reinstall the slide into the carb. Insert the spring, position the diaphragm and reinstall the top. Make sure you don't pinch the diaphragm. If you don't feel comfortable doing this work, find someone that can do it for you.

Good Luck
Steve

Wont start has spark will fire with carb spray was lookn for carb adujustments

If your bike will fire with carb spray, you need a lot more than a simple adjustment. I suspect that you are not getting fuel to the carb. While you have the air filter off, look just inside the mouth of the carb and you'll see a small brass nozzle sticking up. With the engine OFF, twist the throttle grip to wide open throttle position. You should see a stream of fuel squirt into the carb. If not, you don't have any fuel in the carb or the diaphragm in the accelerator pump is bad. Next, pull the fuel line off the carb or the fuel petcock. Crank the engine over and watch the fuel flow from the fuel hose. If it's weak or none, your petcock is bad. In 1996, Harley went to a vacuum operated petcock and they give problems. The diaphragm in the fuel petcock will go bad and you'll have a full tank of fuel but none gets to the carb.

Good luck

I have a 2003 FXD Superglide with low mileage...it backfires, hestitates and seems to run lean..It runs just fine when I pull out the maunal choke slightly...Is it a carburetor problem or an air mixture...

Your carb probably need going through. I would suspect that it's your accelerator pump has got a few holes in the diaphragm and maybe your slow jet is partially stopped up. If the bike has been sitting for an extended period of time, this is more likely the problem. The air mixture is not adjustable unless you or someone else has removed the "anti-tamper plug" that covers the idle mixture adjustment screw. And, only then if you or someone else has turned the screw. If the fuel air mixture has changed, it's something wrong inside the carb. I'd either take it apart and clean it or get someone else with the proper experience to do it for me.

Good Luck

Frequent backfiring

Usually means it is a little rich, or it has a leak in the exhaust somewhere pulling in air when you are slowing down. Check for leaks where the pipes attach to the cylinders, or look for black smoke when revved up.
