Question about 1984 Honda GL 1200 Aspencade Gold Wing

1 Answer

1985 1200 goldwing with 50,000 miles. Will pop one time on warm restart, otherwise runs fine but gets 24 mpg. On the net I see complete rebuild of carbs as a solution. It there another less costly solution such as running cleaner through it? If rebuilding is the answer is there a reliable place I can send the carb assembly to for rebuild? Thanks John

You may have one flooding carb. Warm it up and (using protection) pull one spark wire off and back on at a time, till you find one that isn't working. That will be your bad guy. If you do try the rebuild- hold your **** as those kits come in many forms costing up to $100 each with floats and needles and jets. So who ever does it-make sure they get the gaskets only kit. If you have never done one --they can take all day.

I have helped lightly stuck parts with a straight shot of fuel injector cleaner. But you need to get it out of there as it will eat pump diaphragms an old fuel lines pretty fast.

Knowing what's the mpg on a l20b?

The classic method is to keep a log on paper or in a smartphone, of odo reading and fuel fill quantity at each fill stop. Do this for about 10 times, total up fuel used, subtract ending odo from starting odo, and then you have miles/gallons = mpg

How many miles per one galoon

The gas tank holds 18.5 gallons and the car gets 17 - 25 miles per gallon. On the freeway you can expect around 24 mpg.
So for your trip you could go 330 miles on a tank of gas.
14 gallons x 24 mpg

84 to 89 1200s goldwings have a pulse generator

1984 models have the PGs at the back of the engine. The engine has to come out to get at them, or I think you can pull the swingarm instead.
From 1985 the PGs are under the timing belt covers. Still not the easiest to get at.

Gas Consumption

If you have the RT with the 5.7 hemi as stated I do not beleive you ever got 27 to 29 miles to the gallon. the best that car will do is 24 - 25 miles to the gallon and that is on a pefectly flat and straight road at about 60 miles an hour. As fas as the MDS the best way to tell (if you can't feel it change) is to use a tool such as the dashawk that monitors the engine stats. I disabled the MDS for several reasons and really so little to no change in gas milage. I do not beleive the MDS helps as much as people would like to think. I have added a lot of mods to my hemi, but still think that 14 - 18 mpg under normal driveing is good for this car
