The book says you can remove the oil pump without removing the engine form the frame. I disagree with this statement. I've gotten the lower plate off without removing the engine bolts. All there is to taking the pump off is disconnecting any hoses going to it and removing the four bolts that hold it on and together. Why do you need to remove the oil pump?

Good Luck

SOURCE: how to remove and replace oil pump on a 2000

To remove the oil pump from a Sportster. First drain the oil tank. Disconnect and mark all hoses. Plug the hoses to keep oil from leaking out and contamination from entering. Remove the four bolts that hold the oil pump into the engine and allow it to drop down.

Now, I don't know if they've changed anything since the early '90's on the bikes but they say you can get the oil pump out without having to remove the engine. I've found this not to be true. I didn't have to completely remove the engine but I did have to take the engine loose from the frame at both the front and rear to get the pump out of the engine. I couldn't even get the two rear bolts out without doing this. Hopefully they've made it to where you can get the pump out.

Now, comes a question. Why do you want to take the pump out? On the late models, they've done away with those aggrevating pins that kept shearing. The only late model pump that I've had to deal with had trash in the inlet fitting and stopped the oil flow into the pump. Someone had tried to stop a leak in the oil tank by putting "Creme" fuel tank coating in the oil tank. Never do this. The "Creme" coating is not effected by the oil but it is by the heat. Hot oil is not good for the stuff. It gets brittle, flakes off, and plugs the inlet of the oil pump. Just pull the bottom plate off and clean it out.

Good Luck
Steve

1996 sportster oil tank has 3 hose fitting the 1984 got 4 fitting how do you hook up hose ? from 84 to 96

Hi, Onebob yesterday I sent you a free service manual that covered both oil line routing systems but I guess that wasn't good enough and since we are thousands of miles apart I can't hold your hand to open the manual the best I can do is tell you that your Sportster oil tanks have:
1. Feed line from the bottom of the oil tank to the oil pump 3/8"
2. Return line from the oil pump to the top of the oil tank 3/8"
3. Vent line from the top of the oil tank to the gearcase 5/16"
If you have an aftermarket oil tank with 4 ******* I can't help you. You will need to do some R&D on your own.
You are welcomed to send me photo's of your tanks so I may be enlightened to your dilemma. xlch@mail.com
Good luck and have a wonderful day.

How to check engine oil level on 1996 Harley FLSTN

Hi Anonymous, the engine oil dipstick on later models unscrews, on earlier models it just pulls out with moderate force, on Softail and Sportster models the dipstick is located on the right hand front side of the oil tank and the Harley Bible says, engine should be at normal operating tempurature, let idle on jiffy stand for two minutes. Shut off engine and hold bike straight up and dipstick all the way in, correct engine oil level will be at the top full mark. Do not overfill oil tank as this will cause engine breathing issues. On Dyna and Touring models The engine oil dipsticks are located on the right front top corner of the transmission and the engine oil pan is underneath the transmission. The engine oil level is checked in the same manner as Softails and Sportsters. If you are having oil carryover or breathing issues (dipstick launch) try running oil level half way between the add and full marks, running the engine at this oil level will not harm normal operation. Good luck and have nice day.

Oil pump removal oil pressure

I need to know what year model Sportster you're working on. I know the book says you can change the oil pump without removal of the engine from the frame but it ain't that easy. Let me know exactly what year model you're working on. You may NOT have to pull the pump.

Are you certain you have no oil pressure? Pull the spark plugs and remove the oil filter. Spin the engine with the starter and see if oil pumps out of the oil pump adaptor. If it does, you have oil pressure and the oil pressure switch is lying to you. If your bike is equipped with an Evolution engine, 1986 or later, it will have hydraulic tappets. If you indeed do not have any oil pressure, the tappest will rattle badly.

Good Luck
Steve
