Question about 2000 Moto Guzzi Quota 1100 ES

1 Answer

Good Morning! I live in Portugal and have a Moto

Good Morning! I live in Portugal and have a Moto Guzzi Quota 1100 Es manufactured in 1998, and it's the only one existing here in Portugal. This Bike ECU has the following reference IAW15M-AO 147-98 12V. I've been experiencing many troubles with this moto between 3000 and 4000, I keep on putting it to repair and many parts have been change in trying to fix this problem, but no results. This bike ECU has been connected to diagnostic software by the official representative of Moto Guzzi here in Portugal and the diagnostic computer doesn't find any ECU. Moto Guzzi Oficial representative, when trying to make the test claim this happened because the ECU is not programable and there fore the computer can not connect. Their suggestion is that the ECU is not in conditions and should be replaced. I read on "This old Tractor" web site that Moto Guzzi Quota 1100 Es ECU until year 200 ware are replaced, what I believe it didn't happened to mine. I would really apreciate if you could help me on this. And why doesn't the machine recognises this ECU? Who should I adress or what should I do. Thank you very much for your attention. Kind Regards

Hi, Soniagfilipe if you take your bike to a dealer for a specific issue that costs outrageous amounts of money only to have the same problem 2 days later your situation is not unique unfortunately and it is a double edged sword. First, you suffer the emotional stress and frustration of spending all your hard earned "Drachma" and your bike does not get fixed. Second, comes the realization that not only are the technicians incompetent but also the service manager for not doing anything about it, this isn't rocket science, it's a glorified lawn mower engine with extra cylinders and carburetors sometimes. You need to put an end to all the double talk, dancing around the issue, and a we don't care attitude, but how you ask, very simple you exercise the "nuclear option" go back to the dealer and ask to speak to the owner or general manager if the owner is not there, then with a straight face and polite voice you ask him/her if they can provide you with the name and contact phone number of the person at your brand motorcycle headquarters in your country that can recommend a repair facility that will fix your bike because your local dealer either can not or will not. I guarantee you that is all the grease you need to get someone to light a fire under the proper persons rear end to resolve your issue "toot sweet" Good luck and have a wonderful day.

These are infamous for side stand switches that allow the bike to shut off and more importantly not start when side stand is down. Even worse is that it can activate even with side stand up. So either pull it off and short it out or clean up the connections.

SOURCE: Moto Guzzi breva 1100 won't start clicks at relay.

Take a look at the starter solenoid. There are two larger wires, on the back. One from the battery positive, (main hot wire), the other goes to the starter motor (If you jump these terminals the starter will spin but will not engage the flywheel). Look at the wires and nuts on the solenoid, especially the starter motor side make sure they are clean and tight, have not gotten hot and started rusting. Also check the voltage on the solenoid wire, (smallest) wire from the start button. In some cases there is a voltage loss on this wire. Next time it will not engage the starter right away, make a jump from the main power battery terminal on the starter to the solenoid wire. If it starts right up every time, you need to add and wire in another relay to carry the voltage to the solenoid from the start button, (a relay to work the solenoid, lol). If that test does not work or help.. Tap on the starter motor with a hammer. if it catches and turns the engine then, the motor brushes are worn and need to be replaced.

Hi, Notinkent the parts fiche says 5/10 or 1:2 ratio but for this situation, I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. Hello, i haven't worked on but a few Guzzi's, but it sounds like you may have a ground issue. I would check for voltage at the ignition switch, relays & fuses. If no voltage there, check the main battery to frame ground. Then start with a continuity test from the battery to circuit box & continue until you find where the break is.... Some of these bikes, like the sport model, have 2 batteries, so if yours does, make sure that both are good....I hope this helps some.

Wire clutch adjustment

dunno if that's backwards. Anyway: adjusted to just minimum sane play it barely engages with the lever fully in. If I would have to adjust the lever to any shorter position (for smaller hands) it would probably not engage fully. I understand there is an adjustment at the clutch arm down behind the gearbox. If I adjust there what will happen? I'm guessing I can wind that one in a bit then loosen the wire a bit. Will this solve the problem or will I be back at where I am now?,The arm only has limited travel, and there is a screw adjustment between the arm and the end of the clutch push-rod. Not sure what it is on the 1100s; it could be a hex headed bolt or an allen grub, but it's a bugger to get at because the swinging arm is so close. There's going to be some sort of locknut which will have to be slackened first. Make small adjustments, screwing in towards the 'box, and trying the clutch lever each time. ,,,

Blue smoke

but never been fuurther than a tappet in the engine. If you are not using oil and the smoke only lasts for 10 seconds or so and you get no more smoke later, then I would ignore it. If the guides were worn, you would also be getting smoke on the overrun. Are the plugs getting fouled up? Again if not, ignore. If it aint really broke, don't pay out wads to fix it. (Unless you are a perfectionist, and insist on everything being perfect regardless of cost). Even if the guides are a little worn, and it will only be a little at this point, they will go on for some time yet.,,,

Quota injection balancing

but the english translation is very poor and totally confusingMike Haven has an article on his MPH Cycles website that covers the Quota 1100. He recommends closing the air balance screw permanently and carefully syncing the butterflies so that they work in unison. http://www.mphcycles.com/Technical/Tech..html#Tuning%20The%20EFI%20Guzzi Syncing the butterflies is not at all easy because the design does not have a cute little adjustment screw. I worked long and hard one afternoon on mine only to get it close...but not as good as I wanted. The next time I mess with it I'm going to modify it so I can turn a tiny little screw to sync the butterflies. A modification like that is desperately needed for the Quota. ,,

More on the VBoltage Regulato

on my 2000 Quota ES1100 . Here are the results . I had top make a simple bracket out of 1 inch strap metal that you can buy at any hardware store. Just requires drilling 3 holes. I did not have to remove the tank as I wired into the Red wire going to the battery. The other two which go to the indicator light I just taped up and put aside. Prior to installing I took a reading at 4000 RPM. I did not have the PIAA running lights on . To be truthful I did not think of it. I read 13.92 VDC.This is well within the acceptable range of 13.5 to 14.5 This was the max voltage I could get out of it. After installing I checked again with the same meter. As before the voltage started to climb at about 2500 RPMs but the max now was 14.45 at 4000 RPM. This time I turned on the PIAA lights which came with the bike. It is wired in using their harness & relay system. The peak voltage with them on was 14.20 VDC. I have posted a few pictures on the link below . You might notice that there are more cooling fins. It also thicker than the stock unit. http://micksan.smugmug.com/gallery/2584576#136191917It looks like that big spot light is right in front of your left cylinder - doesn't it compromise the air-flow to the fins? ,,
