That's a tough one since I can't hear the noise. If you noticed that your clutch lever felt a bit different after you heard the noise, it could have been the throwout bearing that pushes on the clutch release rod. Check the oil in your transmission. Look on the right hand side of the bike at the end of the transmission. You'll see a chrome end cap on the transmission. It'll have a plug in it that takes a large hex key or Allen wrench to remove. Remove the plug, stand the bike straight up and use the dipstick to check the oil level in the transmission. Do not screw the plug in, just stick it in the hole. The oil level should be between the two lines. If your clutch lever starts changing and the clutch gets where it won't release, the bearing has failed and must be replaced. These bearings are very small and if the clutch cable is not adjusted to have about an 1/8" of freeplay, the bearing runs all the time and will fail. It's a radial bearing less than an inch in diameter. In my opinion, it's a very poor design. But, they don't cost much and they aren't too difficult to replace. If this is what the problem turns out to be, re-post and I'll tell you how to change it.

Good Luck
Steve

Hi Anonymous, you could have a clutch or transmission issue try a clutch adjustment first then call, take a ride or trailer your bike over to your local dealers service/parts department, I'm sure they will be happy to take your Harley Davidson for a test ride if necessary/possible and offer professional advice and assistance concerning your issue. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like the shifter pawl return spring has broken on the shifter pawl shaft. Harley has had a problem with these but there is not a recall notice on it as far as I know.

The fix is a major job in that all the primary has to be pulled as well as all the guts in the transmission. The shaft will not come out with the two shafts in the transmission. But, at least the five speed transmission is designed to do this with. Much easier than the older four speed.

I do not recommend that you even start the engine until this is repaired. I've heard of the broken spring getting into the gears and doing even more damage. I've been replacing them with either Sputhe or Jim's parts.

Good Luck
