In 1996, Harley went to a vacuum operated petcock and these things do give problems. Take the air filter off the carb and with the engine off, crank the throttle wide open. Watch for fuel to squirt into the carb from the brass nozzle just inside the mouth of the carb. If no fuel squirts, your float bowl is empty, no gas is getting to the carb. You'll have to loosen the petcock and drain the tank by loosening the large nut and catching the fuel with a large funnel and an empty fuel can. Once the fuel is drained, you can remove the petcock. Remove the square plate on the rear of the petcock and remove the spring, the needle, and the diaphragm. Hold the diaphragm up to the light and gently stretch it looking for holes. If you find a hole replace the diaphragm. Blow through the petcock with some low pressure compressed air to verify that it is not plugged up and reassemble the petcock. If you have a hand operated vacuum pump, test the petcock to insure that it is functioning correctly. Personally, I suggest replacing these petcocks with a high quality manually operated petcock like a Pingel or you can purchase a new OEM one from Harley.

Good Luck

Good job.
A couple more things:
  • Replace fuel filter, it's in the gas tank
  • Check and clean the Spark Arrestor screen at muffler, when they plug up, it's a major restriction to exhaust gas flow
  • And check and adjust High/Low screws at carburetor, video attached.
  • And clean or install rebuild kit for carburetor
Good luck...

Crafsman 25cc weedwacker won't stay running

You probably have a bad hose or a bad hose connection that is sucking mostly air instead of delivering full fuel to the carburetor!

1990 Chevy Van with a 350 small block that has a mind of it's own.

Try to get it running a bit to warm up the exhaust. Take a point and shoot thermometer and take the temp of the cat. If temps exceed 400 degrees I would start to suspect a plugged cat.

93 chevy lumina runs rough dies and won't start after it warms up

Back firing is usually an indication of a timing issue

The timing chain is most likely worn & jumped a couple
of teeth or the distributor was installed wrong,if you recently

17 hp briggs smoking badly . found oil in gas. took head off cleaned valves and piston. took off carb and checked float. checked breather seems ok. starts right up. littlesmoke then more as it warms up...

The only way oil can get into gas is if someone adds oil to the gas! Drain gas tank. Put Clean gas in and try it then. Oil in gas usually fouls the plug so if it doesn't run by now, check the firing in the plug.

I need to determine if exsisting in tank fuel pump is good. I have the tanked dropped and fuel pump out. My question is how can I tell if the old pump is still good? My blazer would run before, I thought I...

Ground the motor (electrically) to the frame of your Blazer the apply some 12v power (or 13v) to see if 'she' hums or pumps for that matter. (Some will hum but not pump a thing of course). I'm guessing you have an older K-5 or something. There's a filter between the fuel line and carb if nobody ever showed you that one (on the older ones with 350's 4bbl's anyway).
