I have lost my key & do not know if it is a 5 or 7 cut key. My bike is a 2000 Honda Goldwing SE 1500 full dress. Does the fairing have to come off? I bought the bike from a private party & do not have a key # for it & am unable to locate the previous owner, as his phone is disconnected. I am pretty mechanical but have never done this before. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.

Lock removal varies depending on the model, on most Honda's the ignition is held on by two screws that can be accessed with a socket on an extension by reaching up from under neath the head light bucket (most Honda's). Normally you can unbolt one side of the headlight bucket and swing it to one side to get access. On other models you may have to take off a side cover to access the screws (switch under the seat). On sport bikes you may have to remove the upper fairing. You may not have to access the ignition to get the key code. On all the older models (5 cut keys) the key code is stamped on all the locks. You should be able to get the key code off the helmet lock, steering lock (if separate), gas cap (if open), or base of the ignition switch. On seven cut key models you may be stuck. The only place to get your key code was on the metal tag that originally came with the keys. If you no longer have the small metal tag check your dealership paper work , a good salesman will write the key code in your owners manual, on the bill of sale, or on the packet all your paper work came in. If the sale was recent the dealer may have a record of the code. If none of the above applies and you have a seven cut ignition with no key code you will have to buy a LOCK SET or remove the Ignition Switch and hope a locksmith can file a key that works (both sides of the key have to be cut perfectly for the key to turn in the ignition).

Is/are your trunk/saddlebags locked. If you can look at one of those key locks , you can see if there is a key code on it. I do not remember if your machine is 5 cut or 7 cut. It does take a special long key blank. The original Honda key is about $12. Of ten to unbolt the main switch you can reach up through the front fork opening to reach the mount bolts and drop the switch out the bottom.http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcy...

If you have the key code tag or the key code stamped on the key, be sure to write down the key code in your owners manual and on the envelope that contains your title.

Where can find instructions or video on replacing the ignition switch NOT THE KEY IGNITION OR LOCK CYLINDER - rather the ignition switch that has a post that moves as you turn the key- 2004 Crown Vic?

i think that you are referring to the steering wheel lock mechanism

if there is a you tube on that procedure, that is what you will be looking for

If that is the case , the easiest procedure is to undo the "u" joint at the base of the steering column inside the car and remove the wheel and column as a unit

the bolts that hold that section to the column are sacrificial bolts and when the correct tension is reached , the heads snap off making illegal removal extremely difficult

getting to the remainder of the bolts needs space and with the column still in the car ---very difficult

Replace ignition switch on 99 jeep wrangler

The ignition key must be in the key cylinder for cylinder removal. The key cylinder must be removed first before removing ignition switch.REMOVAL 1. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery. 2. If equipped with an automatic transmission, place shifter in PARK position. 3. Rotate key to ON position.4. A release tang is located on bottom of key cylinder.5. Position a small screwdriver or pin punch into tang access hole on bottom of steering column lower cover.INSTALLATION 1. If equipped with an automatic transmission, place shifter in PARK position. 2. Position key cylinder into steering column as it would normally be in the ON position. 3. Press key cylinder into column until it snaps into position. 4. Check mechanical operation of switch. Automatic Transmission: Be sure transmission lever is locked in PARK position after key removal. If key is difficult to rotate or is difficult to remove, the shift lever-to-steering column cable may be out of adjustment or defective. If key can be removed, release lever mechanism may be defective. Release lever mechanism is not serviced separately. If repair is necessary, the steering column must be replaced. 5. Connect negative cable to battery. 6. Check electrical operation of switch. ab7076e7-9719-44a3-b66a-8584c6b2a3c1.jpg bfaa43e6-23a3-4771-9d95-55c2c3bf0a78.jpg

My 1988 Buick LeSabre runs great ! Now the key will not turn off. The key is in the on position. I removed the battery cable to turn the car off. now how do I fix the ignition?

You need to replace the ignition tumbler, which is the piece the key goes in. You have to remove the steering wheel, lock plate, turn signal switch, and the key in buzzer contact. This contact piece will be very difficult to remove because the key actually gets in the way internally. This piece is a yellowish square plastic piece with two copper contact straps protruding from it. Beneath this piece is a t20 torx screw/pin. Remove this screw/pin and the tumbler slides right out. Install in reverse order.

A key broke off in the ignition. i need to know how to remove the ignition switch cylinder

Hi Once the cowling around the ignition is removed, turn ignition switch to the first position (because the key is in the switch you should be able to rotate to the first position)
On the top side of the ignition barrel there is a spring loaded pin ( this pin is difficult to see and get at)
When you have located this pin press it in ( use the cranked end of an alen key )
While its pressed in pull out the ignition barrel with the broken key in it
when you have the barrel in your hand you will be able to get broken key out.
All the best with this problem

I broke a key off in my ignition how do i go about gettin the old igniton out

first things first call your chevy dealer and ask the parts dept. if you can buy just the ignition some cars the ignition is actually part of the column. so if you can, carefully remove the plastic cover and there should be a couple of screws and some wires holding it in place not usually very difficult. but be aware getting a new key later may be difficult. so order the ignition with multiple keys hope this helps

How to fix ignition switch in 2000 toyota landcruiser - key turns, but it feels like mechanism is broken inside and starter won't engage. Any possibility of fix, or is replacement necessary. And how...

Replacement is necessary. To remove it you need to remove the trim around the switch. All toyota ignition switches have a metal tab that needs to be pushed up and the key turned to remove it. Then it slides out. About half an hour to an hour job depending on your skill level.

How to remove a piece of key in the ignition of a 2006 suzuki forenza

it will be very difficult what you need to do is go to your local lock smith and see if they will sell you two key extractors they look like very small drill bits about as big around as a large safety pin. With small teeth on both side. Once you get them you will insert one one top of the broken side of the key and one on the bottom twist them around each other a couple of time and gently pull out the key. Hope This Is HELPFUL
