If the rear brake light is working when the rear brake pedal is depressed but not when the front brake lever is pulled, the most likely problem is the front brake light switch is bad. The switch is located inside the right handlebar switch housing. To get to the switch, you must disassemble the switch housing. Loosen the throttle and idle cables. Take the two bolts that hold the switch halves together out. Carefully lift the top half of the switch housing and disconnect the throttle and idle cables from the throttle sleeve. Be careful not to lose the ferrules that go on the ends of the cables. Lower the bottom half of the switch housing and you should be able to see the switch on the inside of the end that faces the front brake master cylinder. To replace the switch, you must de-solder the wires, replace the switch, then re-solder the wires to it. When you put everything back together make sure you don't pinch any wires and that the throttle operates as it should.

Good Luck
Steve

Break light works with hand lever not foot pedal

Hi Anonymous, always check bulbs and fuses first, then follow the rear brake line from the rear brake master cylinder towards the rear brake caliper when you come to the metal tee you found out where the rear brake light switch lives. Use a test light to check for continuity. Good luck

Tail light and foot pedal brake light does not work but hand lever brake light works.

Probably a bulb/ rear brake switch combination. If your front brake switch is working, then half of the bulb is working. No taillight issue, probably a bulb. No rear brake light, probably the rear brake switch. Located on the lower right rear of the frame, behind the exhaust. Check for power on the orange/white wire at switch. If you have that then check for power on the other terminal of the switch while pushing on the pedal. The rear brake switch is hydraulically operated so you must have adequate pressure to activate it.

Window break light good but actual break lights not working

sounds like you have a bad turn signal switch.

If the third brake light is working than we know the fuse is good and the switch is good. The third brake light bypasses the turn signal switch. If the rear turn signals are working than we also know that the wiring from the switch to the rear bulbs is also good. The brake lights and the turn signals are on the same bulb so the turn signal switch is what determines if the bulb gets power from the brake light switch or from the turn signal flasher. If the switch is bad usually the first thing that stops working is the brake lights.

Typically you can wiggle, jiggle, pull, push on the switch lever with you foot on the brake and get the brake lights to work. Sometimes turning the four way on and off several times will also get the brake lights to work. If this is the case than a new turn signal switch will solve you problem.

If you have any questions let me know!

Hell i just bought a chevy cavlier and my back break light is out...the light its self is on...its just the break light when pressed...

you don`t say if its both or just one brake light out.you say the light itself is on but not if you mean tail light or what.the tail lights use a different filament in the bulb than the signal light which is the same filament that the brake light uses.if the signal light work on the rear then the bulbs are good,if just one side works then the bulb is no good on the side that doesn`t work.if the signal lights work but neither brake light works then you need to check the fuses in the fuse panel under the dash on the drivers side.if the fuses are good then it will be either a bad wire at the brake switch or a bad brake light switch, this is located on the brake pedal lever under the dash.

1991 honda accord brake light indicator stays on dash

Brake light switch? Its mounted near the top of the brake pedal lever. The lever contacts and holds the switch closed which keeps the lights from turning on when at rest. When you step on the brake, the contact is broken, the switch extends and completes the circuit allowing the brake lights to illuminate.

Brake light doesnt work when either or both brakes are applied

You need to remove the bulb and check to see if you are getting voltage to the socket when you hit either the front brake lever or rear brake pedal. Use a test light or a volt meter. If you are getting voltage, then the bulb has burned out on the brake light element side. If you are not getting voltage, go back to your brake light switches and see if they are working. When you pull the lever or hit the pedal, you should have voltage going through the switch. Check the fuse, with a test light or meter, to see if it is blown or not. DO NOT trust your eyes. One of those is definitely your problem.
