Question about Yamaha DT 360 Motorcycles

1 Answer

I have a 1997 Yamaha Big Bear that won't start with the button, can hand crank it with the starter cord and it will start - very hard to pull over cause I have a bum arm. I'm thinking it could be a bad starter or solanoid????? How do I check ? I tried 'crossing " the solanoid with a jumper but had no luck. When I push the starter button I hear a clicking in the solanoid. HELP !!!!

You could be right about the starter relay, start with a test light and check the power at the relay. then if so check power at the switch if good make sure that the power is getting back to the relay if so replace your relay. let me know what you find and if you need help

350 big bear quad bike won't start unless I pull start it.

Hi, Connor and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Bank angle sensor tripped and ignition/light key switch not cycled to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
5. Faulty ignition switch.
6. Faulty starter button.
7. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
8. Security alarm needs a reset.
9. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
10. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
11. Electric starter shaft pinion gear is not engaging or over-running starter clutch slipping.

I have a Yamaha 400 big bear and cooling fan won't

Start by checking the fuses... If they're fine the start tracing the wiring from the fan. Look for any burn marks, pinches, etc... If in doubt I'd recommend taking it to a professional. It's really easy to mess things up if your not sure what your doing

Jake, if your ignition is electronic, you may not have enough system voltage to run the starter and the ignition at the same time.
Try with a jump from another vehicle. Likely it will start.
Try bringing the battery to a full and complete charge, water up first,
then retest starting. Some units just have to have a perfect battery and state of charge.

When you say it won't start, do you mean it cranks but won't fire, or it just won't crank? If it just won't crank, you could be having an issue with the starter relay. The often become intermittent before failure. Many owners do not know there is a starter relay because it was added as a recall item i order to protect the iginition switch from burnout. The starter relay is located in the very front of the engine compartment, just to the left of the battery, on the back side of the radiator crossmember.

Yamaha big bear 400 will not start wilth electric started will start fine with pull start has comp, fuel and spark

Sounds like a problem with the starter, could be a starter fuse, relay or solenoid. The start cicuit wiring could also be damaged. If you can pull-start the motor, and it runs fine, you have pretty much eliminated any problems with the motor. Check the wires running from the start button make sure they are intact, also trace them and look for around a 1" cubed black box. This is the relay, when you push the button, if its working, you will feel the box click. Also locate the starter and do the same thing. If you feel or hear the starter click, the solenoid is working. The battery voltage could also be too low to energize the starter motor. Could also be a battery or alternator issue. Check the battery voltage and for any sounds coming from the bike when you push the start button.
