Question about Honda FXSTI Softail Standard Motorcycles

1 Answer

My son has a cr 85 2003 model, nown it will not run for long at all without stalling, when attempting to restart it will back fire cough splutter and through oily fuel out of the manifold joint, really frustraiting me now, ive had people tell me its the mixture, spark plug, or dirt in the carb but have checked and cleaned everything and more besides, it was leaking very very slightly from the front of the head gasket, so changed that too, but still have same problem with getting it to run properly without cutting out and backfireing as it dies, please any help or hints would be most appreciated. nikki

Sounds like you covered all the basic's and got sound advice as they the obvious first steps my addition to the above is I think the backfiring is giving a hint towards possible problem here if backfire occurs that generally points directly to lean on fuel now being two stroke I am sure it is getting heaps of fuel but what fuel? I would revisit the fuel mix after a full carbi clean (compressed air through all the jets is crucial here) if you you are mixing 40-1 then ignore this but if you are mixing 30 - 1 ratio or 25 - 1 ratio then definitely consider less oil as a test at least also what petrol are you mixing premium or standard? I would also be testing results with just slight change to the fuel air mix screw backfire suggests it may need to be undone a quarter turn
Oil out the exhaust is very common almost expected from two stroke make sure you try a new spark plug with any change you do and only change one thing at a time then test if no improvement put back the change to original and change something else or you will never know whats going on
To me everything sounds lean on fuel now its just to find a reason it's lean on fuel good luck

I have a Mazda RX8 a 2006 model is really difficult to start without aerostart and it's running like the timing is out. People sometimes idle but when revved will cough and splutter.changed plugsleads

use the scan tool to determine the fault
low fuel pressure sounds like a candidate for the problem followed by crank position sensor but the scan of the faults will get closer to the rpoblem

My triumph tt600 2002 has developed a cough and splutter when idle and low revs! It did back fire and cut out when slowing to stop. I have taken baffles out and been running like this for a year. Just had...

I would start with new plugs and cleaning the air filter. Also, if the bike has carburetors, I would drain the carbs. Condensation from the gas tank may have gotten into the carb float bowls.

Start with the simple and replace the fuel filter. The fuel filter should be replaced every 15,000 miles or once a year to ensure the fuel system is running 100%. Auto Zone will have the fuel filter and can give you the step by step instructions to getting the job done with common tools. If it's the fuel pump failure, you have not gotten the car restarted. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to know you got your car running 100% again soon and please rate.
