Engine cuting out just brought second hand would like to know standard main jet ,pilot jet size and base idle air mixture screw setting incase previous owner has ajusted. probaly just dirt in carb ?.

Hi, Jim it should be noted that the "AIR FUEL" mixture screw adjustment "ONLY" manages your idle and has no effect on any other circuit also any intake leaks must be repaired before the A/F adjustment procedure can be performed otherwise you will never obtain a proper idle and you will waste a lot of time chasing the impossible. The A/F mixture screw's purpose is to fine tune the fuel charge entering the combustion chamber. The following applies to both 2 and 4 stroke engines:
1. The mixture screw may be sealed at the factory with a Welch Plug please review the following video for removal.

6. To fine-tune the idle circuit, adjust the mixture screw 1/4 turn in or out to achieve maximum idle RPM, wait 15 seconds between each adjustment for the idle to settle.
7. Never go past 3 full turns out this will make the fuel charge rich, foul plugs, and produce black smoke out of the exhaust, if the engine RPM keeps increasing past 3 turns the pilot/idle jet is too small and needs to be replaced with the next size larger.
7. After achieving maximum idle back out the mixture screw another 1/8 of a turn then adjust the throttle cable idle stop screw to 950-1050 RPM.
8. This procedure works great on 99% of all engines, for the 1% that demand a more robust throttle response on aftermarket monster fuel delivery systems additional tweaking outside the box may be necessary.

Hi, Anonymous you need to make sure you have no intake leaks by spraying some Brake Kleen, Contact Cleaner, Starting Fluid etc. around the intake manifold and seals, if the RPM's go up or down significantly then you have a leak that needs to be fixed before you can continue with the carburetor adjustment.
The engine should be at operating temperature with the enrichener off to set the idle between 950-1050 rpm. Turn the idle skrew clockwise to increase the idle speed and counterclockwise to decrease the idle speed. If you have access to your air fuel mixture skrew you may turn it as well, if not there is a video below on how to gain access, make sure you start with clean or new spark plugs. Gently turn the air fuel mixture skrew clockwise until it starts to bottom out "STOP" do not over tighten as it will damage the taper on the end, now back the skrew out 1-1/2 full turns to establish a starting point start the engine and check the idle rpm's and turn the idle skrew accordingly for 950-1050 rpm if necessary, turn the air fuel mixture skrew 1/4 turn at a time and let the engine settle for about 10 seconds, turn the skrew clockwise for a leaner mixture and counterclockwise for a richer mixture, you are seeking the highest rpm your air fuel mixture skrew can acquire without going past 3 full turns from bottom then resetting the idle skrew back down to 950-1050 rpm If you can not detect any rpm change and can not stall the engine by turning the air-fuel mixture skrew all the way in then your pilot/low-speed jet is too big and needs to be replaced with the next size smaller. Final adjustment should be made with a clean air filter mounted to the carburetor.

Fine tune your motorcycle before rejetting your carburetor. If it's still running too lean, you can replace the pilot jet as a first step

Remove the bowl at the base of the carburetor by unscrewing the screws holding it in place. Unscrew the pilot jet inside, but be careful not to strip it. The jet size will be on top.

Use a screwdriver to remove the main jet from the brass jet needle holder, which is also called the emulsion tube.

Put in a pilot jet that is one size larger. Replacing it with a jet two sizes larger will make your mixture too rich.

Tune the slow/idle settings before replacing the main jet. Replace the main jet with one size larger. The sizes are in increments of 5.

Put the bowl back on, and align the accelerator pump shaft and rubber boot.
7

Reinstall the carburetor on the motorcycle and retune it to finish the rejet procedure.

I have a primary jet and secondary jet in the carburator of the 500 gl silverwing . and the jets I have is 75 and 125 which goes where . and what should be the setting on the air jet ?


The secondary main jet (125) goes into the jet needle holder in the center of the carb (needle). The primary main jet (75) is between the secondary main jet and the pilot screw (this one is slightly off center) . The start setting for your air screw should be 1 3/4 turns. Warm up your engine and drive for ten minutes. Adjust your idle speed to 1100 + or - 100 rpm. Now turn pilot screw in or out to get highest idle speed. Readjust idle to 1100 rpm. Now turn pilot screw in till idle speed drops 100 rpm. If pilot screw seats go to next step. Adjust the pilot screw out 1 full turn from 100 rpm drop point. Now reset Idle to 1100 rpm. That is how Honda says to set your air screw. Standard setting is probably sea level and going through the procedure will set you up for the altitude where you ride. Do the adjustment during good weather at the altitude you plan to do the most riding.

no mate on the carb there are 2 screw one for mixture and one for idle the mixture one you need a picture below will demonstrate you need to screw this little screw in 1/2 of turn and see if this improves if not keep doing this what your doing when screwing this in is your putting lees fuel in with the air and put the clip to the standard specifications 85be14f.jpg

>>Now Setting the Air Mixture Screws:
>>****Turn the Idle Air (L) and Main Air (H) Mixture Screws In Until SNUG **Do Not Jam** Then Reverse Both Screws 1 1/2 Turns. Set the Throttle Full Open, Start the Engine.
>>Turn the Main Air (H) Mixture Screw Clockwise Until Proper Revs are Obtained. **Carefully Use your Finger and Move the Governor Arm to Rev the Engine (on Chainsaws and Trimmers Use the Trigger to Rev the Engine) Until you Reach Max RPMs (on Chainsaws and Trimmers, the RPMs are Not Set to MAX. Set to Max and then Reverse the Setting Screw 1/4 or 1/2 Turn. If the H Mixture Screw is Set too High; the Engine will be Starved for the Oil in the Gas and Damage the Piston and Jug/Cylinder) and the Engine is Running Proper at Full Throttle Up a Grade and for Chainsaws and Trimmers they Do Not Bog DOwn Under a Load.
