Hello
Your gas tank petcock is diaphram operated.
there is a vacuum line coming off the intake, that goes straightb to the petcock.
when you turn the motor over a vacuum is created, pulling the petcock diaphram back and allowing fuel to flow to your carburetor. when you turn the motor off the vaumm is gone and the spring behind the diaphram pushes it closed and stops the fuel flow to the carbs.

Now the reason the carbs are overflowing is because the floats valves are not closing, in other words the floats are sticking.
Usually a good carb clean will cure the problem, especially for that year.
the older ones usually require new float valves/seats that are usually found in a good carb rebuild kit. You shouldn't need one.

If your really broke try tapping on the bowls of the carburetor lightly, while the engine is running, sometimes the vibration will vibrate a particle loose that may be holding open the float valve.
if it works then the fuel should stop overflowing while running.

if you know how to work on it, try this, with the engine off.
open the carburetor drain screws so that fuel will run out the carb. drain. flush out the carb.
get a container to catch the gasoline.
while fuel is flowing tap the carb bowls a few times then closed the drain screws.
clean up any spilled gasoline .
start your bike.see if they stop leaking and the floats are closing.
if it still leaks, you'll need the cleaning.

Happy Riding
Best Regards
Big Al

ON LOW GEAR MOTOR IS WEAK ,ON HIGH GEAR RUNS OK

Hi, Sounds like not enough fuel, in low gear motor turns over a lot faster, using more fuel, high gear it chugs on a trickle of gas. When i used to work in a garage, the final test was a long steep hill that would show flaws in the fuel delivery system, and everything else to, well worth the extra few minutes time. Also, if the big fuel tanker is at your favorite gas station, you might better keep driving bye, or else you can pay 4 bucks a gallon for mud, rust, and water. There is a sock screen on the pick-up tube in your gas tank, the screen is so fine and dense, that gas will flow easily thru it, but water has to be sucked thru. Suppose there is 4 gallons of water in the bottom of your tank, car sitten still the water is half-way covering the pick-up sock, car is running good. Junior stomps on the gas, then hits the brakes for the stop sign down the street. The water sloshes in the tank, covering the pick-up sock several brief moments, forcing the fuel pump to suck water thru the dense screen, causing all kinds of problems. Up here I have a big ice slab in the bottom of my tank that grows each time i get gas until april. Now I hear that ethenol in the fuel is supposed to cure all that. When I was young all the cars had drain cocks on the bottom of the fuel tank to let the water out. Best Wishes

My 1997 mb100d van with 2.9 diesel engine wont stop running its motor even with the ignition key on off position

as it is a diese (no elec ignition)l, to stop the engine the fuel must be stopped at the pump.
This is achieved by vacuum in the small white plastic tube running to the pump, if it is split or leaking air there is no vacuum to cut off the fuel, find the leak (maybe torn diaphram at end of tube)

The toto toilet keeps running over the overflow tube in the tank. I cleaned the valve which worked for a while but now is back to running. Should I replace the gravity valve?

If you can lift the float arm and it stops the water flow into the tank then the float arm needs to be adjusted. The proper adjustment will stop the water flow when the level is between 3/4" and 1" from the top of the overflow tube. The newer style valves have an adjustment screw that is easily located and can be adjusted without any dis-assembly.

Engine is hunting at tickover

Check the float needle valve for smooth (sticky free) operation. If the needle valve does not stop the flow of fuel into the bowl, it will spill into the intake and rev the engine. Check also the overflow tubes. If the overflow tubes are plugged the problem will show up as reving, if they're open, check for fuel leakage under the bike when running.

Neddle valves aren't expensive to replace but they sure are annoying when the stop working correctly.

Check the floats when you have it apart to make sure they aren't filling with fuel.

Gas leaking from hose that is under tank that is not for gas flow

is it an overflow from the carb? gas will only be in one of 2 tubes and they are the fuel line from the tank and the carb over flow. unless you have an electronic fuel pump then tubes go from tank to pump to carb. if its coming from the overflow then you are getting too much fuel into the carb float chamber. you may have a sticky float. thy getting some Berrymans B12 fuel additive and putting double the doseage in the tank. run engine til hot then leave it to stand overnight. this should break down any gum/varnish that has built up in the system

has this been in storage thru winter?

Stop flowing

You'll have to check a manual for the location of the tank vent. Many have a vent in the cap, but not all of them do. A clogged vent will prevent fuel from flowing out of the tank after it's been running normally for 10-20 min. The fact that you see the fuel flow stopping in the line/filter, pretty much rules out the carb floats, doesn't it? The problem has to be in the tank, petcock or fuel line. You mentioned that you have another tube going into the petcock. That would indicate that you have a vacuum operated petcock. If the vacuum line is leaking, it could restrict fuel flow. Also if the vacuum diaphram inside the petcock is damaged, same deal. Just about all vacuum petcocks have a position labeled "prime". You can bypass the vacuum function by using this setting. Next time the fuel stops flowing, put the petcock in the "prime" position. If you see the fuel start to flow, then your problem is likely in the vacuum line or the diaphram.
