On the 1974 xlch Harley Sportster 1000cc kick start is there a way to retard the spark on startup?


early harleys have an impulse magneto as the ignition system
that means that as you press on the crank pedal the piston moves up , the magneto is held back by a spring until it reaches a set timing point at which point it releases for maximum spark
the method of start this type of equipment is to kick start slowly and not as you would for conventional type kick start
you have probably noticed that if you try for a fast kick start it tends to throw the lever back up under your foot
Just an aside here --there was a joke about harleys with electric start--if it back fired your thumb would get broken
joke based on the fact of the impulse magneto that was replaced with an electric start system
the impulse magneto operation is what gives the harley the strange idle operation
get a harley workshop manual or talk to a harley service center for correct ignition timing of the impulse magneto

I have a 1975 Harley SX 250 with a very intermittent spark.


If your points are sparking as it is running, replace your condenser. I would do that first anyway. You can put any condenser in it., A condenser is a condenser. Make sure your new plugs, points and condenser are all operating correctly. You have probably already done all that but it is all I can think of.

1985 sportster 1000cc cylender torque specs


Hi Anonymous, in a criss cross pattern and your torque specs are:
1. 1/4" bolts 10 ft lbs.
2. 5/16" bolts 20 ft lbs.
3. 3/8" bolts 35 ft lbs.
4. 7/16" bolts 55 ft lbs.
5. 1/2" bolts 75 ft lbs.

1980 sportster tappet settings


Hydrolic: Set the tappet at its lowest point by rolling the rear wheel with the bike in gear (on a stand of course.) Adjust the push rod until there is no shake. Load the tappet 4 full turns. The push rod will be tight. Wait at least 15 minutes before moving to the next one to allow the pressure to dissapate. Don't want to bend a pushrod or valve. Repeat for all 4 push rods.

Solids: Same as above but push rod should spin freely without any up/down slop. No need to wait for the bleed off. Go right on to the next one.
