Question about Harley Davidson FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic Motorcycles

1 Answer

I have an 89 FLSTC. Yesterday I went to start the bike and it was like the starter would not engage. Made a hell of a whine though. could it be the starter or solinoid. Where should I start my search. Any help would be great.

Hi, Charlene for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your problem. I would start by ensuring that the battery is fully charged, and that all the battery and starter connections are clean and tight. If the problem persists, the starter solenoid is probably faulty.

A noise like that is somewhat serious...It could be from low power steering fluid, low transmission fluid or even the starter remaining engaged. You need to find the source of the noise right away to avoid major damage!!!

You don't say what year/model your bike is. None the less, most likely the starter bendix is shot. This can happen in an instant (especially if you have a mechanical advance and the springs are weak or broken.) This would make a sort of "zing"ing sound when you try to start it. The solenoid's job is to push the bendix into position to engage the starter ring on the clutch hub. The starter motor won't turn until the solenoid is fully engaged. Check the bendix - it should turn freely in one direction and not at all in the other. Good luck.
