Question about 2004 Honda Silverwing 600 ABS

1 Answer

Honda 2004 Silver Wing 600 ABS has not been generally starting but every once in a while does. I've replaced the battery and taken it to the Honda dealer when it finally started. It always started for them. I picked it up and brought it home. It sat for a few days and wouldn't start again. It finally started, I waited a few minutes then turned it off. It would not start again. When I turn the key to ignition the headlights come on and dash lights work. When I hit the start button, lights dim but starter doesn't engage.

It seems like something is draining the batery. For a battery to go dead on you like that there must be something draining the battery while the vehicle is switched off. It could be something like a short across some circuit. The first and easiest test is charge the battery and then to disconnect the battery negative cable whenever you park the vehicle overnight etc. and see if the battery still runs down.
As a more positive step is to disconnect the positive lead from the battery and wire a bulb like a tail light bulb, between the terminal and the removed lead. The bulb should light up. Make sure that everything on the vehicle is switched off, the bulb should still be lit. Remove and replace the fuses one by one until the bulb goes out. That is the circuit that is running your battery flat. Check all the components on that circuit until you get the light to stay out and your problem should be fixed.
Check your charging system. With the engine running at about 4000 rpm, a volt meter across the battery terminals should read around 14 to 14.5 volts and drop to about 13.8 volts with the engine at idle. If this does not happen, the charging system may be defective. Even with lights on the voltage should climb, but will drop lower at idle.

Maintenance costs for a Honda Silver Wing 8,000 mile service

Hi, Dnoss57 did you get ripped off morally yes legally no the guy in the first link paid $550 do yourself a favor and buy a few hand tools and do the work yourself if your drive belt looks in good shape run it. Drive belts are tough and can last way past 16000 miles with proper care, for this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the best tool you ever bought for your Honda, despair not, for a mere $25 you can download another one. No juice in bike with new battery

Hi I am Vortash common fault with this model bike was the ignition switch a quick test is put a meter across the the battery .. you should read 12 -13volts if the voltage drops when the ignition is switched it's usually is ok but not allways it is just a quick check sometimes it is intermittent now see how far the voltage drops if it is considerable chances are you have a short .. usually the rectifier or the starter feel the battery see if it is getting warm with the ignition on this will also indicate a short .. check for bad earth connections particarly from the battery to the frame.. Check all fuses in this country there was one on the main lead from the battery .. hope this helps regards Vortash
