SOURCE: Starter has a hard time turning motor sometimes. It

No, the starter motor is not out of alignment and a shim will not do any good. Keep in mind that I cannot hear what your starter is doing. But, if you say it sounds like it slipping a tooth or a making a grinding noise, it's probably the internal starter clutch. This part is also called an "over running clutch".

This part is replacable but it requires the disassembly of the starter. If you're mechanically inclined and have the time and tools, you can remove and repair your starter and save yourself a few bucks by replacing the clutch. However, if you are going to have to pay someone to do the job, you're better off to have the entire starter replaced. The extra time you would have to pay for to disassemble and reassemble the starter would negate any savings you would have otherwise realized.

Now, there is also the chance that there is damage to the ring gear on the outer clutch basket and the starter jackshaft. I have seen it on occasions. Both the jackshaft and the ring gear are replacable but the clutch assembly must be removed. I would recommend that your replace both if you find either part damaged. Once you find out which it is, repost and I'll tell you how to repair your bike.

Good Luck
Steve

If you are getting 12 volts at the starter, and a good GROUND, while holding the starter button, your starter is bad.

How do i replace my starter gear on my 1992 yamaha xj600 seca ii motorcycle?

I have viewed a parts diagram of the starter drive system on your bike and it appears to me that the crankcases must be split to access the starter gear/drive parts. This is a major dissassembly and should be done by a qualified technician.

1981 Yamaha xj750 seca. How do I change the starter clutch

No You Should be able to remove the one way starter clutch by removing the right-hand side cover and also removing the starter you can Utube the procedure im pretty sure but its pretty basic to do once your inside the cover and also you may wanna drain the oil previously to removing the side cover so it doesn't drain out on the floor while your trying to get cover off also be careful because there are dowels that align the case to the engine and sumtimes they rust together :)

I bought a 1981 Yamaha 750 seca and I've had it for about a month. I was riding one day when it started revving really high as I was downshifting when coming to a stop. It is now stuck in first gear....

Hi, 750seca and the usual suspects are:
1. Clutch not disengaging.
2. Bent shift shaft.
3. Shift fork bent or seized.
4. Gear seized on the shaft.
5. Gear positioning lever binding.
6. Shift return springs weak or broken.
7. Shift return spring pin loose
8. Shift mechanism arm spring is broken.
9. Shift mechanism arm is broken.
10. Shift drum is broken.
