If you hear the starter click but the starter is not turning and the engine is not turning over, the problem is more than likely in the starter solenoid. When looking at the end of the starter, you'll see a five sided plate held on by three small 3mm screws. Remove these screws and take the plate off. Behind the plate is the solenoid plunger and spring, take these two pieces out. Now, look into the solenoid and you'll see two large copper contacts. One or both of the contacts is probably burned pretty badly and is not smooth on the surface. One will probably have a crescent shaped area that is burned away and lower than the rest of the contact. If you find this, you need to replace these contacts. Kits are available either through Harley or aftermarket sources.

If you hear the click and you hear the starter spinning but the engine is not turning, the problem is inside the starter. The over running clutch is bad and must be replaced. To do this job, you must remove the starter from the bike and disassemble it. Replacement parts are available either through Harley or aftermarket sources.

Good Luck

My 2000 Pontiac Montana won't start. I hear a clicking noise from the back but the starter doesn't engage

have somebody hit the starter with a hammer while somebody turns the key on the start position as he holds the key keep hitting the starter not at the solenoid at the round part if it tries to start then you have a defective starter now if you have a alarm system you are going to have tutoo isolate the starter to do a different test.

HD starter spin but does not engage

There is a clutch in the starter motor which holds the starter gear away from the main shaft when it is not turning. this can seize and would cause the problem you are indicating.

My 2006 road king Harley won't start after riding over a curb

You didn't describe the "click"

A series of rapid clicks means a low battery, or a bad (usually ground) connection, like if you crunched/abraded a wire along the lower frame when you drive over a curb.

A single, loud click indicates its a bad starter relay, about a $12 part:

1999 road king wont start replaced master fuse and cam sensor still wont crank

Confusing. The cam sensor does not crank so what are you saying about that and was the master fuse blown or you just replaced it as a possible solution to no starter. THEN what happens when you turn on the ignition and what happens when you press the starter button. One thing you could do to assess whether or not the starter is okay or not is to bring power directly to the small wire on the solenoid and if the solenoid is okay it will engage the starter drive and turn the starter over. If the solenoid is not good this will not happen. If you were to bring power directly to the starter post that connects to the solenoid and the starter spins you will know that the starter will spin but not any more than that. If the battery is dead or below about 12 VDC you may hear a small click if the starter relay is energizing but if you hear a louder click the solenoid is not energizing and if you hear a number of the louder clicks the solenoid is trying to operate but may not have enough battery voltage or the starter drive is not able to mesh with the ring gear or the solenoid contacts are burned or the starter ground is poor/corroded or you have poor/corroded positive battery post or other cable etc connections. POST more information about what is and is not going on for more detailed assistance etc.

High idle on HD, 08 Road King Classic

For fast RPM's at start that doesn't go down shortly after starting.
1) Put bike in neutral
2) Push to ON the first switch to right of starter switch next to throttle.
3) turn dial on gas tank to the On position for 5 seconds then off wait 2-3 seconds and repeat 3 more times total of 4 times
4)then Turn everything to off positions
5) wait a few seconds and start normally

I found that if you shut down the bike with rpms up a bit, it will start the next time with a faster than normal idle.

If you do this technique when the bike is cold, it will run a little fast til it warms up. Don't ask me why this works.

Truck has electrical power but won't turn over. I think I can hear the starter solenoid engaging. Not sure. where do I start trouble shooting?

Safety first!--Make sure you're in park & brake on-- Try shorting across the starter terminals with a screwdriver,if the bendix kicks in & nothing spins, remove the starter & put in bench vice ,(or hold down securely), & jump with cables.--REMEMBER POLARITY--If the starter spins you are in deep *******---something in the motor is probably locked up.(If the starter doesn't spin get a new one.)

I have a 2000 Heritage Softail Springer. Recently the starter makes an extremely loud grinding sound intermittently when I try to start it. It doesn't do it every time but sounds really bad when it...

This could be several old is your battery? if it isn't holding a full charge it sometimes won't have the cranking amps to fully engage the starter. It could be the solenoid or the starter itself but I would start with the battery.
