Speedometer was working and now is not. Suspect that the speedometer cable is the problem. Have a new one and wanted to know the easiest way to replace it.

Make sure you lubricate the cable first, you may have to remove some of the bodywork from around the speedomiter to make it easyer to get at the screw thread on the clock, undo it from the clock you may need a small pair of pliers to turn the screw in an anticlockwise rotation, remove from speedo drive, and make sure all is clean and ready for the new cable, replace it wheel side first, following same route as orriginal, replace as previouse on the speedomiter, you may have to rotate wheel in order to locate the cable into the clock, tighten , check the cable does not foul any part when moving the handlebars from left to right.

Depends on if it is the cable, the gear in the transmission, or the speedometer in the dash.

Why would my speedometer stop working?

Depends on if you have the cable type or a sensor type.
the cable type has a nylon worm gear which the end of the cable is screwed on to, could be worn ( it's on the side of the tranny).
It could be the cable itself, or on the back of the speedometer.
If it is the sensor type, the vehicle speed sensor operates the speedometer and needs replacing. ( that is screwed into the side of the tranny and has a wire connection). You might want to have it checked.

Speedometer and Odometer quick working. How do I

Follow the speedometer cable from the firewall, down to the transmission. It should bolt in the transmission, remove the cable from the transmission, and turn the gear to check to see if speedometer is working, if not, it's most like the speedometer head unit.

Hi Tracy:

You don't say whether the speedometer has also stopped working. If it is still working, then it's an internal problem in the speedometer unit which will likely need to be replaced.

If the speedometer has also stopped, it's often the speedometer cable that has failed; have the cable checked (it could come out of its socket at either end, or be broken). This is a much less costly repair than replacing the speedometer unit.

Often the old cable can be pulled from the sleeve, leaving the sleeve in place, and a new one pushed into the old sleeve to replace the defective cable.

Let us know any additional information.

Speedometer is not working

I would suspect the speedometer cable is broken. It is not easily removed when it's broken.

You have to access the speedo head behind the instrument panel to remove the top piece, and remove the bottom piece by taking the cable housing loose at the transmission.

Then you can insert the new one from the bottom end -- it may take some finesse since both ends of the cable have a square cross-section which has to be inserted into the gear & head.

Hello I hope this is helpful. The speedometer works off a small black cable, that run's from the back of the speedometer under the dash to the transmission even if the line looks good it can still be broken inside the line. The line's are real cheap you might want to try to replace it. Hope this helps. Tim
