SOURCE: rear brake cylinders are stuck, can not push them in

I have a 2004 SAAB 93 and just finished replacing the brake pads and rotors yesterday. On the piston itself you should have two little notches. You can either or a GM rotor reset tool that will push into the two little notches and push against the piston while rotating it clock wise. Or the way that I did it was to take a C clamp and put the caliper back on the car. Clamp it on the back of the caliper to the front of the caliper so it will remain stationary. Then take a pair of needle nose pliers and rotate the two notches clockwise while pushing into the caliper. It will take some strength but you should be able to push them in. Be sure that you spray the boot around the piston when some WD 40 so it does not crack and or break during the process. If you have any additional questions about this feel free to email me.

SOURCE: 1996 T-100 dash brake light will not go out

The brake fluid level sensor in the master cylinder is stuck in the lower position which completes the circuit to illuminate the light.. Try tapping lightly on the side of the reservoir to loosen it. If that does not help, you will need to replace the level sensor.

If the Master Cylinder BORE size is the same as the bore size required for the caliper you want to replace it with, then YES, you can use your existing Master Cylinder.

Are you bleeding it by gravity (flowing down from resevior thru caliper) or forcing the fluid up thru the caliper to the resevior. The latter will get more air out in less time. Simple cheap pump kits are available at you auto dealer and u can use it on your other vehicles.

Why even with new brake parts in the front and rear on my 2995 Ford f150 2wd truck would front brakes work but not back ? I even put truck on bay lift and hit the brakes and rear just kept spinning.

Check your master cylinder. It could be a piece of junk lodged in the fluid port for the rear brake lines, or in the brake line its self. The fact that both rear wheels spin tells me that if it is a clogged line, it is between the two manifolds, (one next to the master cylinder, and the other where the rear brake line splits into two... one for each rear hub. Or it could be that the piston in the master cylinder needs to be replaced. I would disconnect one brake line at one rear wheel and disconnect the rear brake line at the manifold (near the master cylinder)and blow that line out with air pressure. . do not leave the rear brake line connected to the master cylinder as you blow air through the lines as you may damage the master cylinder piston packings. You'll have to bleed the brakes when you are done.

I think brake proportional Valve (or Brake pressure regulator) which usually a part of Master cylinder is suspicious.
It regulates pressure to Front and Rear brake line.

If I were you, I try to draw air from Master-cylinder side (not Caliper side).
(Bleed from connector between Master-cylinder and pipe, same way as caliper. someone keep pushing brake then you lose connector then tight. Don't forget to put towel under master cylinder to catch brake fluid)
If air trapped in Proportional valve (pressure regulator), pressure won't relay to rear brake line but only front side.
Front has two separate line from master cylinder (right and left) but rear goes in one line from master cylinder then separate at rear.

Did you noticed both rear brake dragged when it's hot day ?
Because when air get hot, air expand and pushes to caliper and drag but not respond to your pedal.
(calipers don't respond when you push pedal, but it's pushes calipers by itself even you are not pushing pedal, when it's hot because air expand)
Sometimes, seal get old and lose pressure for only one side (front or rear).

if this happened after you did brake job, or you notice your brake was vapor locked (too much brake on hot day then brake fluid boiled), maybe air bleed and whole fluid change may solve.
if you didn't have any unusual activity but it gradually losing pressure to rear, I suspect master cylinder (proportional valve seal).

Sorry I don't have exact e46 master cylinder diagram but basic diagram, hope you can understand what I am talking about.
Picture shows "leak" but this case "Air" in somewhere in pink.
or lose seal on rear piston.

Does the brake pedal go to the floor? Or does it stay up, and is hard to push...? Did you bleed the master cylinder? Also, you will need to bleed all 4 wheels connection to the brake wheel cylinders...you must start with the rear, farthest from the master cylinder, then other rear, then front farthest from the master cylinder, then other front...the bleeding of each line is a must, since you switched the master cylinder.

I would remove one of the rear lines at the master cylinder and both at the brakes. Then blow compressed air through the line at the master cylinder. Then all you have to do is look for the big mess of brake fluid, and you'll know which is which.

Replaced all brake lines, rear wheel cylinders, front calipers. No fluid to rear brakes, no fluid to master cylinder bleeder. Fluid is in front brakes. How to resolve? Thank you


It sounds as though where the rear brake lines meet up with the master cylinder; there is probably a piece of dirt in the lines that could be blocking any fluid from getting in. To test this, I would remove the brake lines from the master cylinder and then remove the master cylinder. Once done, have the master cylinder cleaned inside out. This will remove the dirt particles that are clogging your lines.

I hit something in the road last night that tore the brake fluid reservoir off of the rear master cylinder. I have ordered a new master cylinder; I've never changed one out before.


No problem, just change the old one out with the new one, fill the master cylinder reservior and bleed the brakes. To bleed the brakes, do this in EXACTLY this order. Fill the master cylinder. Press the rear brake pedal and hold it down. Open the bleeder valve on the rear caliper and allow brake fluid and air to bleed out. Close the bleeder valve. Let off on rear brake pedal. Repeat process until you have a full firm pedal. Do not allow the master cylinder to run dry during the bleeding process.

Sounds like you may have a probblem with your master cyl. It could be bypassing the seals inside. Does it drift off when holding?If there is no external leak problem is usualy here. Try replaceing brake fluid use only specafied fluid wrong fluid will ruin system.Bleed brakes.If still pursists master cyl needs rebuilt or replaced.

Hello. i have a 1991 audi 100. brake padel has become mushy but there are no signs of brake fluid leak on the master cylinder or the lines. the brake pads are new. thanks


Just because there isn't an external leak in the brake system doesn't mean there isn't an internal leak in the master cylinder. A mushy pedal is usually an internal leak in the master cylinder or leaking wheel cylinders in the rear brake drums. Check the rear brake wheel cylinders for fluid leaks, if there are none or you do not have rear drum brakes, your best bet is the master cylinder :)

Rear brake cylinder and bleeding


Relax....KTM's are delicate in this procedure.
First of all make sure that you are using DOT 5.1 brake fluid and not 4 as we use in the Japan models.
Then take the rear caliper in your hands and push the piston all the way in.Then bolt it on its position.
Bolt on the brake hose to the rear caliper tight and leave it loose on the rear master cylinder side (loose but ready to tight it on like half circle loose) and clean up the reservoir completely.
Take a syringe from a pharmacy and a piece of 3mm clear tube.
Start pushing brake fluid in the caliper's loose bleeder until you see fluid coming out fron the hose's loose end on the master cylinder.
The tight the cylinder's bolt and keep pushing fluid until you see it filling up the reservoir.
When you see the reservoir fully filled up, tight the bleeder, take out the syringe and start pressing the brake pedal 15-20 times and the last one keep it down and loose the bleeder (with a tube attached to it and to a bottle) for a sec to relieve the pressure along with any air bubbles.DON'T LIFT THE PEDAL UNTIL YOU HAVE TIGHT BACK THE BLEEDER or the system will **** air in.FIRST tight the bleeder and THEN loose the pedal.
Keep doing that until NO air comes out of the system.
While you are doing this second stage keep filling up the reservoir and do not let the master cylinder **** air in.
