Question about 2001 Suzuki SV 650

My son's 2001 SV650 Suzuki battery was not holding a charge. We purchased a new battery. Next day, same thing. The shop said its the regulator, but wait, it still did not work so they said its definitely the stator, so they replaced that. Now they are saying the regulator needs to be replaced and the price keeps going up. They have had the bike for two months now. I feel like they are taking advantage of a female. Should I now pay for a regulator or buy it and install it myself? Is it hard to do and how much should it cost?

Well I was just going to log off & do some work & I saw your question & had to answer.
I HATE IT when people take advantage of female bike owners/customers.
It sounds like you could use all (or ANY) help you can get.
So I want to answer your questions as accuratly as I can get.
Should you now pay for another regulator-I should think not.-the shop should sort this out for you-If they fitted a regulator WITHOUT testing the stator(which they should have to find out what caused the regulator to go)-& then burn out the good NEW regulator because of the stator-& then now want to charge YOU for the second regulator-NO WAY.

I don't know what else to say!
Heres a link to the part you need & fitting a regulator is usually pritty easy -un-bolt it- dis-connect it- reconect new one & bolt in place.Heres the link with the part & price.It seems that there are two types of regulator.
One is $184.79 & the other $213.31(US)
I hope this answers your Questions & I do think that the shop should have just sorted this.You have to worry what will hapen if they fit the new regulator & if it still dosn't fix it!!!! : (

I have had my suzuki 2 years and hardly had any probs i was riding home the other night and i smelt a burning smell next thing all the electrics cut out and aboout a mile further down the road the bike...

Have to check the voltage regulator for burned wires or yellowed connectors,, also looking over every wire on the bike you can get to would be a good idea,, something could just have rubbed thru the insulation on a wire resulting in a dead short,,, look carefully for the damaged wire,, It could easily be a voltage regulator
We just replaced the reg on a SV650 and that was the trouble,

Not charging with new battery & rr

If its a "new" regulator it could still be bad. Take it to a shop theyll test it for next to nothing. I know on my 08 gsxr 1000 if the stator is bad it wont hold a charge either, not sure if the boulavard has one.

My 2006 sv 650 will not start. I bought it and the fuel pump was frozen. So I replaced the pump and it primed but did not start. I held the throttle open and it would start and immediatley die. So far I...

Hi, Ldeelena and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. The fuel tank has old dead gas.
3. Fuel tank bottom contaminated with ethanol sludge, dirt, water, rust, etc.
4. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
5. Fouled spark plugs.
6. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enrichner.
7. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
8. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
9. Fuel line to carburetor or throttle body pinched, kinked or blocked.
10. Carburetor float stuck.
11. Fuel injectors clogged.
12. A severely discharged or damaged battery, you need 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
13. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
14. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil or plug between ignition sensor and ECM module.
15. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting check for spark leakage in the dark, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
16. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or MAP, CMP, CKP, O2, TPS, ETP, IAC sensors.
17. Faulty neutral, clutch lever, or kickstand safety switch.
18. Faulty fuel pump or fuse or relay.
19. A stuck bent or burnt valve.
20. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
21. Security system not disarming alarm needs a reset.
22. Check for engine trouble codes.

My battery wont keep a charge

did you check the rectifier circuit? thats the only thing left in the charging system can check this buy using a voltmeter, first gain access to battery.... ground the black meter lead to a good frame ground (make sure bare metal surface, not painted), and touch the red lead to the positive terminal on the battery..with the engine at idle, you'll probably see about 12.5v or > increase to 4000rpm and watch to see the voltage rise to approx. 13.5v to 14v and then while holding it at this rpm you should see the voltage being rectified down to about 13v, release throttle now, this is normal operation rectifier is working. If the battery still wont hold a charge then the negative battery cable is probably shorting out on the frame somewhere and draining the battery. You can try to see if this is shorting out by driving the bike around (if you can), for at least 15 minutes above 4000rpm then take a voltage reading real quick... it'll probably be around 12.6 or> ..13v is excellent. now disconnect the negative cable.. tie it off so it wont touch anything, and leave over night next day it should still read about 12.6v. Hope you find the trouble. Can you let me know if this helped you a lot.

I'd try to have it fixed by a radiator company that deals with aluminium its amazing what can be repaired
Its also amazing what Suzuki want to charge for a new one!!

sounds like a charging system. same thing happens with cars when the alternator goes kaput. so i would say check your charging system weather it be an alternator or generator.

Battery not holding charge

Hi first check the alternator belt (is it it there?) if all is ok there then it could be the alternator, have a multimetre put on it it should read around 13.5 if the alternator is doing its job,
