2002 Ford Windstar . Engine light is on. took it to auto zone for a test. codes that came up was p1120 & po122 . that comes back as Thottle Position Sensor for both codes. Changed it and still not solve the problem. The problem is runs good on a flat road. But going up a step hill you lose power. Pedal to the floor does not speed up. Also drove the van with over drive up the hill when you lose power. and without it on it runs up the hill good.

You can disconnect the battery but that temporary check engine light come on because you got a problem that the computer see get your ford pass on computer and repair the problem
their are really no tricks need to get code for check engine light most auto stores offer this service for free if code is a simple fix repair as necessary --but if you have code and just reset you will have to put miles on vehicle most vehicles take over 100 miles so that all components cat converter-o2 sensors-evap system -etc warm up , reset and run thru their paces code can come back and than you are back to square one so get code and start from there
if your engine light is on take it to auto zone or advance auto they will plug into the engine it will then send a code and tell you what you need to do hope it works out.
a check engine light comes on when the system detects a recurring issue.. clearing the code may only keep the light off for several miles till it notices it again, autozone will give a free diagnosis printout to help narrow down the issue..
paradise by the dash board lights? i also have engine, brake, abs, and door lights on, cruise control has its own mind, and just recently o/drive kicks out on its own(very dangerous on icy roads). mine going for recall issues as posted: rear axle cracking, under hood fire from leaking fluid onto (2) 40 amp connectors,--- recall issues repaired at no charge to you--good luck
Do you know how to test electrical circuits ? Is the PCM - engine computer controlling the coils ? Test with a test light ! One side has B+ voltage the dark green with orange stripe wire ,the other goes to the PCM , which will suppy a ground when triggered . You can test this with a test light . or you can buy a noid light at the parts store . If you replaced the coil an spark plug an that code comes back ,could have a burnt driver inside the computer , test it first ! How to test computer transistor driver without scan tool
The only way to tell why teh engine light is on is to have the engine codes read. Many part stores do it for free. Most shops charge $40 which is well worth it. That's what we charge. Usually it turns off if there is a faulty sensor, or circuit problem,
If you live in the US, take it into an Auto zone store and they will read off the stored codes for you. Once you have the codes you can decide on a course of action.
Other major auto parts outlets may offer the same service, as they all want your parts business. Give them a call.
There are issues with upper/lower intake gaskets on this engine. Also make sure you don't have a tube disconnected from the air intake between the air filter box and thottle body. If everything is connected, I would be renewing the upper/lower intake gaskets. This will cause lean codes to be set, and you may have noticed a ratty idle on cold start-up. Hope this helps.
