  • If you bought a new gas cap and it is not clicking it is either not a locking gas cap or it is to small and not catching properly. You might want to take that gas cap back and ask for the proper one.

MIL light came on after filling gas tank.. Should I assume bad gasoline?

No, you don't assume anything when the light comes on. You get the trouble codes read to find out which system caused it. If it was bad gas, you'd be noticing poor performance. When light comes on after fill, it's often an EVAP code.

Here is a good one. I have a 2005 Equinox that we just bought. Went to put gas in the tank and after I was finished I tried to put the gas cap back on and it wouldn't lock down. I figured that the...

I learned the hard way that you cannot buy a replacement gas cap from Auto Zone and have it fit on a Chevy Equinox. I tried for over two months thinking there had to be some other issue (there was), but soon as I gave in and bought a cap from dealer, one of the codes cleared. Don't try to save money. For a few dollars more, it is worth it. I still have other code problems due to battery replacement, but learned my lesson on the gas cap.

Gas caps don't fit and cause the service engine

Yes, the wrong Gas Cap will cause your Engine Light to come-on and stay-on. The Gas Cap is connected with your emissions/EVAP system which is monitored by the computer. An incorrect Cap would cause incorrect cycling of fuel vapors, causing errors.
Only get your Gas Cap from the Desk at the Autoparts Store after they have looked it up on the computer. OR go to a Dealer to get the correct Cap, but this is usually more expensive. OR call a local Junk / Auto Salvage Yard and see if they have one for your specific/exact vehicle (this is the cheapest means). DO NOT by a generic Cap from the shelf, even if it says it fits all Ford's.

Check engine light on, gas cap tight

Because this is a 1996, it's got a standard OBD-II computer. Take it to any auto parts store and ask them to read the trouble code for you -- every major parts store (Pep Boys/Autozone/Checker/etc) will do it for free.

Your OBD connector is behind the ashtray in the center console -- pull the ashtray out, then push down on the metal part at the top to release it and pull it the rest of the way out of the console.

If you generally do your own work, you might jump on eBay and look for an OBD-II code reader. I got mine for $25 including shipping. It's nothing fancy, but it's saved me a few trips to the parts store place.

I just got my oil changed, and my check engine light came on

Good chance they did something during oil change, inadvertently or on purpose. Check your oil level first, then look for broken wires. Check your gas cap too, a loos e gas cap is most frequent reason for the light to come on. Finally, take it to an auto parts store and see if they can hook up a diagnostic checker (for free, autozone does not charge for this service.) and tell you the problem.

Check gas cap indicator light

Hi. this situation concerns a lose gas cap that you may have forgotten to tighten correctly during a recent fill up at your local gas station or, it could be that the original gas cap or replacement gas cap is not sealing the cap area correctly, preventing proper fuel pressure.

Check the gas cap to see if its tight and that it clicks when you turn it. make sure you turn until it clicks. this will ensure a secure fit.

Now, if you have just recently bought a new replacement cap, it may be the wrong fit and i would recommend purchasing the original replica form the dealership to ensure a tight fit.

Please rate and god bless:)
