Ok, first on the rear on the caliper you have to unplug the cap with a small flat screwdriver, then with an allen tool unscrew the rod which hold the two pads , pull it out and the pads will fall down on the floor.... Be careful when you put on the new pads as this will have some hassle to fit on.

How to replace brake pads on rear of xl 1200c

To replace the pads on your XL, remove the two bolts that hold the caliper into the caliper bracket. Lift the caliper off and set it aside. Look at how the pads and anti-rattle hardware are in the caliper bracket. Take the old parts out and install the new parts.

Now, you must get the piston compressed back into the caliper so that it will go back on. I use a large C-clamp or a large pair of slip joint pliers to compress the piston back into the caliper. Protect the finish on your caliper by using rags or wood strips.

Once you get the piston pressed back into the caliper, reinstall it in the caliper bracket. The press the rear brake pedal repeatedly until you get a firm brake pedal.

Good Luck

Need harley davidson sportster 1200 1996 model free download to install rear brake pads

You must take the two bolts out that holds the caliper to the caliper bracket. Lift the caliper off the bracket and set it aside. Carefully examine the pads and the anti-rattle spring that is in the caliper bracket. Take the old parts out and install the new parts exactly like the old ones were in there. Make sure you put the fiber side of the brake pads towards the rotor.

Now, you must press the piston back into the caliper in order to get it over the new pads. I use either a large C-clamp or a pair of slip joint pliers to force the piston back into it's bore completely. Once you have this done, carefully place the caliper back over the pads and onto the bracket without disturbing the pads.

Now, slowly depress the rear brake pedal repeatedly until you get a full firm brake pedal. Do not ride the bike until you get a good brake pedal and test the brakes.

Good Luck

How do I replace rear brakes on a 1200 2007 harley sportster

Remove the two bolts that hold the rear brake caliper into the rear brake caliper support bracket. Lift off caliper. Notice how the pads and anti-vibration clips are positioned in the rear brake caliper support bracket. Install new pads and anti-rattle clips or springs.

Now, using a large C-clamp or a large pair of slip joint pliers, depress piston all the way back into the caliper. Carefully reposition the caliper back on the rear brake caliper support bracket without disturbing the pads or clips. Install the two bolts and torque to 25 foot pounds of torque. Slowly depress and release the rear brake pedal until a good firm pedal is obtained. Check the brakes for proper operation prior to riding the bike. Failure to properly service the brakes can cause sever injury or death.
