Coolant temp sensor is usually located on the radiator. also check fan fuse, fan relay (in fuse box and relay box), and intake air temp sensor (thats usually on the intake tubing before throttle after Mass air flow sensor)(can be check with diag scan tool specific for that vehicle). if the fan is on a belt, check the fan belt and check for rotted or broken wires going to the fan motor.

Need to find location of coolant fan relay and sensor for 1990 pontiac sunbird ?

if your rad coolant fan is not working check the fan itself as this is a common problem on these cars. disconnect the plug from the fan motor and run jumper wires directly from battery to the fan motor terminals. if the fan doesn`t run replace fan motor. if it does run the check fuses then fan relay. the relay is in the relay box, the coolant sensor for the fan motor is in the head that goes into a coolant passage that has a 2 wire connector.

Location of coolant temperature sensor and location of fan coolant relay switch

Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Engine coolant into a suitable container to a level below the ECT sensor gm_car_cad_sev_ect_loc.gif

    • ECT sensor harness connector (A)
    • ECT sensor
To Install:
NOTE: Use care when handling the coolant sensor. Do not drop damage to the coolant sensor will affect the operation of the fuel control system.
NOTE: Replacement components must be correct for the application. Components requiring the use of the thread locking compound, lubricants, corrosion inhibitors, or sealants are identified in the service procedure. Some replacement components may come with these coatings already applied. Do not use these coatings on components unless specified. These coatings can affect the final torque which may affect the operation of the component. Use the correct torque specification when installing components to avoid damage.
  1. Coat the sensor threads with GM P/N 1050805 sealer or equivalent
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • ECT sensor
      1. Torque to: 15 lb-ft. (20 Nm)
    • ECT sensor harness connector
    • Engine coolant
  3. Start the engine then idle until normal operating temperature is attained.
  4. Recheck coolant level and top off as needed.
  5. Test drive the vehicle.
--- I couldn't find a reference for the 'fan coolant relay switch' although I'm sure there is one on this car.

The electric fan is does not seem to be engaging at low speed causing the engine to overheat when the A/C is on... the engine fan starts and stop irregularly when waiting for the engine to cool down... is...

Hi!!

There should be a fuse/relay box in the engine compartment close to the battery, If your vehicle is equiped with two fans, there should be two relays. There has to be a cooling fan(if equiped with two) that comes in as soon as you turn the A/C on, is your vehicle has one fan, it has two speeds, when the A/C is turned on, the Hi speed kicks in. Sensors in this circuit that are relevant to this function are, Coolant Temp. Sensor, Engine Temp. Sensor.

Check fuses/relays for the cooling fan(s), if OK, check sensors.

Good Luck!! Don't forget to rate this post!!!

Where is the location of the coolant fan switch temperature sensor?

V6 2.8L top right rear of engine. Fan also turns on through A/C pressure switch and coolant temperature sensor, but these should operate independent of the coolant temp switch.
V8 5.0L and 5.7L (Heavy Duty) lower right rear of engine above starter.
Base model V8 uses the coolant sensor (top right of engine) and A/C pressure switches (lower right corner of eng compartment on A/C line to turn on the cooling fan. Fan is energized on all applications through the cooling fan relay.

The radiator fan of the car will not turn off when I shut the car stays on

It's an electric fan and this is not uncommon for any vehicle. Have your coolant lines pressure tested and flushed you may need a new thermostat. The fan runs on a temperature switch and this may also be a cheaper repair to make first..the fan runs because it is told she's all hot n' stuff...it's a good thing until you make specific repair....I'm assuming it's your thermostat.
