If you had to take the clutch basket off to change the stator, you are undoubtedly working on a Sportster. Assuming you reassembled the clutch correctly, you may need to readjust the clutch release mechanism. Remove the cover so that you can gain access to the clutch release mechanism in the primary. Loosen the clutch cable adjuster so that you've got all the slack you can get in it. Now, remove the spring and the locknut from the adjuster. Turn the screw counterclockwise until the screw stops and then turn it back clockwise 1/4 turn. Reinstall the locknut and the spring and cover. Adjust the cable until you've got 1/8 inch of freetravel in the lever at the pivot.

Good Luck
Steve

Need to change stator and rotor assembly in WM2688H*MA

The stator is stationary mounted to the outer tub the rotor attaches to the spindle of the basket which is a shaft that goes thru a bearing to get a definitive answer remove the back panel remove the rotor turn the center bolt till it loosens keep going as this will back the rotor off the stator you will have to pull with a little effort strong magnets to get it off now try to spin the basket by hand if stiff you have a bad tub bearing.

Install stator

In order to install a stator on a Harley. You have to disconnect the battery and remove the outer primary. Then you have to remove the primary chain assembly, the clutch and the compensator nut and ramps to get to the rotor. Once you remove the rotor you'll see the stator. Compensator nut is 150 ft/lb. The clutch is 45 ft/lbs. The comp nut is standard thread while the clutch basket nut is left handed threads.

I have a 1999 softtail how do i change the stator

Drain the primary fluid. Remove the outer primary cover. The stator is behind the compensating sprocket in the front of the inner primary. Increase the slack in the clutch cable at the adjuster. Lock the primary drive with the locking tool (may be purchased from Harley or Drag Specialties if you don't have one). Unbolt the primary chain adjuster from the inner primary. Remove the comp nut and nut holding the clutch basket on the trans mainshaft (this nut has right hand threads).Remove the primary drive as an assembly.Remove the rotor. It is held on magnetically. Unplug the voltage regulator from the stator. Remove the 4 bolts holding the stator to the engine case, and throw them away. You will need new stator bolts to install the new stator. Do not reuse the old ones. Remove the stator. Installation is the reverse of removal. Some models also require the removal of the inner primary in order to remove the stator. If this is required, replace all the seals in the inner primary while you have it off. A service manual will be a great help if you do this job yourself. Torque specs are rather high for reinstalling the primary drive, so you may want to consider having a shop do the job. Good luck!

Not charging battery

The stator is on the left side of the bike while you are sitting on it.

It is underneath the primary cover, the largest one on that side. It can be reached by removing the primary cover, primary chain, clutch basket and the sprocket on the end of the crankshaft. I myself would not tackle a job like this at home. Gaskets are another issue on reassembly. The stator is a coil like winding of copper wire around which rotates a heavy round metal flywheel type piece that has magnets afixed inside of it, as the flywheel rotates around the stator, it creates the electricity, just like a hydroelectric generator you have seen on TV only on a smaller scale.

Washer doesn't spin

Hello skull1829 ,

Was the Clutch/One-way roller bearing changed out for dc/UC errors in your FAV6800AW/FAV9800AW?

If you start a Spin Only Cycle with an empty wash basket will the wash basket spin up CCW and complete the cycle? Lift the washer top from the base a few inches to observe the wash basket CCW rotation in spin cycle. If the clutch spring is broken or end pins of spring aren't seated the tumblers will rotate and the wash basket will rotate slowly CCW.

IF the wash basket won't spin up can you pull the front cover off and insure the motor will rotate the clutch pulley CCW in a Spin Only Cycle? Let’s try these few basic tests and get some feedback for troubleshooting.

Wiring coming from bottom of the tranny is cut off

There shouldn't be any wires coming out of a 1979 Harley Davidson XLS transmission. All wires on this year are external to the crank case. Also the transmission does not have a valve body. Are you sure this is an original 1979 Harley Davidson XLS, or has someone changed the engine. The wires were move to the inside in the mid 80s when the stator was move behind the clutch basket. So if you have the internal stator the engine would be at least mid 80s and the wires would be for the regulator.

Battery not staying charged

The sportster does not have an alternator, it has a stator. Are you sure it is the stator? First check the stator and see if it is putting out any voltage, to do this you disconnect it from the regulator on the right front down tube at the bottom. Use a multimeter to read the voltage, I forget what the values are but they should climb with increased RPM. If you find the stator is the problem get a manuel, it is a pretty big job and I can't go thro all the steps here. You do have to remove the primary cover and clutch basket, the stator is attached to for wont of a better word the fly wheel. The suggestion that I can make that is not in the manuel is to attach a pull wire to the stator wire before you remove it to make pulling the new wire easier,
