Generally that means you are running a little too rich, but reading a spark plug with unleaded fuel is not as reliable or as easy as it was with leaded fuel. Also, your best reading of a plug is after a long constant speed cruise run.

Electrolux 6500 SR overheats.

If there is a dis balance in the armature a bearing was become hot and is not anymore in the center(middle) between the 2 stator coils the field magnet then one of the 2 carbon brush should become shorter then the other.
If there was too long a too much particulate matter in the vacuum cleaner bag then the motor was before running too hot with a lost airflow the field or armature become too hot and a thermal failure on one collector can made the difference , the color of the magnet field coils must be smooth and have not a dark brown color but have a fresh brass color the commutator on the armature have no great differences in the gaps between each other and if running the motor the rpm can sounds good but inspection on the sparks from the brushes is the first relation to see the color of the coils of the armature and the fieldmagnet but also the bearings must feel that its turns smoot. control the carbon brushes can be very important. not too short , if they too short DO NOT REPLACE BRUSHES if bearings color or the commutator surface is not smooth , change IF ITS rewarding only a motor like its a Kirby thats a choice here is how the color of the field should be

1986 nissan truck v6 it has no spark.I was told the coil was replaced a year ago

Welcome to Fixya

Do a test for spark at the plugs. Remove one of the plug wires from a plug and hold it near grounded metal. (If the plug end has a long insulated shroud, you may have to improvise to get ground close enough to the end of the wire.) Have someone crank the engine while you watch for spark. If you get an 1/8" or so of spark, that should be enough to fire.Check the distributor cap inside for signs of cracks or carbon arc tracks. Also, check to see that the little carbon contact for the center terminal is in place; without that you can have spark but it won't get to any plug wires. It's rare, but a rotor with an internal short or carbon tracks on the surface can kill the spark before it even gets to the cap.

Thank you for using Fixya!

Spark plug wire boot grounding out on coil, 96 outback 2.5 automatic, just put new spark plug wires, new spark plugs, and new coil on. ran great for two weeks, now spark is jumping out of boot at coil on...

Hi Solarstarene.
It sounds like the rubber boot is not completely seated or there is a small crack in the boot itself. This will cause arcing to the nearest ground when the vehicle is put into gear. Try removing the wire and turning the boot about 180 degrees to see if this will stop the arcing. I would replace the wires with a better set, preferably from the dealer even though they cost a little more. Hope this helps.

1999 ford tauruscan you tell by looking at spark plugs if you have a head gasket leak? car is missing and sputteringit's not blowing smoke.wondering what the plugs should look like with 35'000 miles on...

mcdevito75 here, Even a tiny crack in a cylinder head gasket would cause 2 spark plugs, one right next to each other to missfire, those plugs would have a whiteish color, (2 plugs next to each other) also, a head gasket would naturally cause a loss of antifreeze as it is leaking and burning in the engine. Normal plugs have a redish brown tint, but may also be a bit dark from carbon deposits.

Clean the cumbustion chamber on my riding mower

It is much more likely that there is an ignition or carburetor issue. If the mower is less than about 10 years old, it may be an OHV (overhead valve) engine. An overhead valve engine like the one pictured above is unlikely to have developed carbon build-up. If it is an older flat head (side valve) engine, it might have built up carbon deposits after several years. If the spark plug screws into a finned flat plate cylinder head, it is flat head in which case unbolt the bolts around the perimeter of the head, and scrape the carbon off the head, being careful not to scar the interior surface or the gasket surface, and re-assemble.

2001 chevy silverado 1500 4.3 v6. new fuel pump, new cats, plugs wires roater and distributer cap. shuts off after driving for a little bit gives no sign or warning. cant figure it out help please!!!

Start off by taking a spark plug out when it shuts down. If it is dry and a light tannish color, then you have a gas problem. If it is wet and dark colored, then you have a spark problem. Let me know what you find out.

It's flooding how can i fix it

Basics to check:
1) Spark plug - brown or dark brown - OK
a) is it carbon or fuel fouled
b) is there spark

2) Muffler remove for inspection
a) exhaust screen clean or plugged
b) inspect cylinder wall/piston as the flywheel is slowly rotated
3) Check cylinder compression

Overfuel or 'rich' condition

3) Check Air filter for fuel saturation
4) Allow engine to run for 5 minutes remove to excess fuel from muffler
5) Fuel mixture ratio: Make sure the oil mix is per your manufactures recommendations
6) If after the above the engine is still smoking and blubbering:
Adjust carb mixture screws to a 'less rich' setting
*NOTE: only move mixture screws 1/8 of a turn at a time,
and try operation before any more adjustment

Be sure to properly oil the K&N filter after you've cleaned it. Then verify that the jetting is correct by operating at full throttle (only for as long as safe conditions will allow) then stop the engine and look at the color of the spark plugs. White coloration of the plugs = too lean. Dark spark plugs = too rich. A nice tan or light brown color = perfect.
Running with jetting that's too rich, or too lean, can both cause driveability problems, poor performance and reduced spark plug life.
While you're in there, inspect the spark plug caps for damage, cracking, and signs of electrical 'leakage' (carbon tracking which are conductive, visible lines running down the length of the cap, inside or out). Replace any plug caps that look suspicious. Tip: WD-40 works as a great, non conductive cleaner for plug caps and high tension leads.
