Question about Harley Davidson FXST Softail Standard Motorcycles

1 Answer

I have (2) questions. 1 is the dip stick on my S&S 107" Big Dog. It has two notches/grooves. (1) is at the bottom of the stick, and (1) is at the top towards the rubber cap. Are those the add fill lines? I also have a oil leak on the bottom of the motor, left side. I just replaced the main seal and still leaking. Any thoughts? It is a custom softail chopper.

Well, I don't know about a Big Dog but I do know how the dipstick on a Harley is set up. You have two marks on the stick. The top mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Since the S&S engine is just like a Harley engine in that it is a dry sump type engine. When you check the oil when the engine is cold, as long as the oil is touching the dipstick, you should be OK to ride. Once the engine comes up to temp, then check the oil and bring it close to the top mark. Do not overfill. Never add oil to a cold engine unless you cannot see oil on the stick.

Now, for the leak on the left side of your bike. Now you said that your Big Dog is a custom chopper and your replaced the main seal. You did not tell me whether your primary drive is a standard chain drive primary or an open belt drive as so many "custom choppers" run. If you replaced the main seal, did you lubricate the inside lip of the seal before you installed it. If not, when the engine starts up, the friction will burn up the lip of the seal before the oil gets to it. It only takes a half second to burn the lip of the seal. Always put oil or light grease on the seal lips when you install a seal.

If your primary drive is a standard chain type, the leak could be a bad engine to primary O-ring that goes between the engine and the inner primary cover.

Another place that the oil could be coming from is the nosecone. If the oil is leaking out of the bottom of the nosecone, it can leak down to the centerline of the cases. When you put your bike on the kickstand, the oil will then run across to the left side and drip off. The best way to find the leak is to clean everything off as clean as you can get it. Then go for a short ride and come back and look for the leak.

I hope this helps.

Ride Safe
Steve

How To Potty Train Your Dog To Use A Dog Bell

If your puppy doesn't have a way to easily get out of the house, you will need to train her to ask to be let out to go to the toilet. It's best to do this when your puppy is young and easy to train. Once dogs get into bad habits they can be hard to change and you might find yourself cleaning up 'accidents' all over the house.

1. The best idea is to buy a dog bell/ poochie bell. HOW TO READ OIL DIP STICK 1986 V12 XJS

There's literally two notches a third of the way up the stick-as long as it's OEM. If there's no notches (they're really noticeable) then yours has been replaced or it broke.

I personally would spend the 15$ and get a new dipstick to be 100% sure.

THE CVT?
you lost your stick? (context?)
I found only a plug.? sure.
do you think, it even had one, then looked and it missing,
hark, many dont have one. did you read the operators guide.
if it skips A/T fluid checks that means , it dont have one.
try stating what you saw, then ask a question, or all this gets to be
dog chasing tail.

CVT -II???

4x4 or 4x2 car>? we cant guess this.
2.0 or 2.4 liter engine. (trans, can be diff. by engine size, on all cars)

here it is, do you see a stick here? NO!

now why?
because folks guess, and blow up transmissions on cars IN WARRANT, is why. a nice $4000 blunder.
wrong fluids or overfilled (not reading simple instructions in the oper guide and fail big time) this is nothing new, some cars now
only have a side plug on the trans case, no tube at all.

to learn more, get the FSM on your car and read the transmission chapter. or log in to alldata.com and read same chapter.

i suspect the dealer has a special tool to do this.
in fact , a real FSM would even show it and show the factory spec. part number .

did you crack the seal?

Fire ring don't sit level on fire box

Had the same problem. Instuctions show a different ring (smooth on one side, grooved on the other) they say to keep notches facing up. My ring had grooves on one side and large square notches on the other. Due to the way the ring is tapered, the round notches face down, opposite the instructions . And plate warmer fit better. Short answer: flip the ring over.

I have an Hitachi EC-12 compressor and I need to know how to verify that the oil level is correct. There is a green plastic dip stick but there are no markings on it that I can see indicating where...

Pull the dipstick and notice the notch cut into both sides at bottom (push dipstick all the way in to check oil level). Fill to top of notch. Lowest safe oil level is bottom of notch. This unit does not hold much oil. Always use the compressor on level ground (tilted compressor could cause a lack of lubrication). Good luck

How to open my Dell Dimension 4600 to install two new gigs of ram

1) Computer off, and disconnected from power.

2) Disconnect all cables leading to your computer.

3) Lay your computer down on a table. Lay the right side towards table.
(I like to lay a clean, static free towel down on the table first, to prevent scratching the computer, or the table)

4) You are now looking at the back of the computer, with the power supply fan to the Left side.

Look underneath, along the top edge of the computer case. There is a computer case cover release latch, on the Right side. Pull the Cover Latch to the Right.

Now pull the side cover towards you. (Towards the back of the computer.

Lay the side cover aside.

5) IMPERATIVE!
BEFORE you reach inside, or take the new Ram Memory sticks out of their protective, anti-static bags, TOUCH the metal frame of the computer case!

Your body carries Static electricity. Static can fry out your computer hardware components.
Touching the metal frame of the open computer case, will relieve your body of Static.

Should you get up, walk away, then return, TOUCH the metal frame again.

Refrain from handling Ram Memory sticks by their gold plated contact pins. (Bottom of ram stick)
You can handle the ram stick anywhere else, as the body of the ram stick is coated with a see-through plastic.

6) Dell Support > Dell Dimension 4600 Series > Manuals > Service Manual,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4600/en/4600i/sm/index.htm

A) Left-click on - Removing the Computer Cover

B) Go back to this main menu, and Left-click on -
Removing and Installing Parts

Now Left-click on Memory.

Not trying to insult your intelligence, but if you have never installed Ram Memory before:

Your computer uses DDR Sdram ram memory modules, ('Sticks')
(Double Data Rate - Synchronous Dynamic Ram Access Memory)
A DDR Sdram module has on Notch on the bottom.

The Notch looks to be centered upon a cursory glance.
It is Not.
The Notch is over to one side a little.

(Actually a DDR Sdram ram memory module has 184 contact pins on the bottom.
92 on each side.
The Notch is located in-between Pins 40 and 41.
40 pins on one side of the Notch, 52 on the other side)

The Notch must be lined up correctly with the Locating Lug, in the bottom of the ram memory slot. The ram stick only goes in, in one direction.

There is a lock on each side of the ram slot. White in color, looks like an 'Ear'.
Dell's reference to a lock is 'Securing Clip'.
Put your thumbs on the top of each lock on a ram slot, and gently push down, and out.
The lock pivots to the outside.

When the locks pivot, the ram stick is raised up out of the ram slot.
Upon closer examination, you will note a small slot at the bottom of each lock.

The bottom corners of the ram stick, fit down in these slots.
Set the ram stick down in the slots of the locks, Notch lined up with the Locating Lug.
Push down on the outside top corners of the ram stick.

When the ram stick is fully seated, the contact pins will be down in the ram slot, and the locks will be seated against the sides of the ram stick.
You will notice that each lock has a 'Bump' on it. This Bump lines up with a Notch on the side of the ram stick.

The bump must be in the notch, for the ram stick to be fully seated.
Usually you will hear a satisfying 'Click - click', as the lock's bumps click into the notches.

IF, the ram memory slots that you are installing ram memory in, have never been used before, they may be tight.
You are installing new ram memory modules.
Makes the fit even tighter.

Sometimes it's a 'Pee Picker,' to get those ram memory modules to go in.
Makes beads of sweat pop out of your forehead!
Other times they slip right in with No problem.
Thought I would warn you in advance.

If I understand correctly, do I understand you are installing TWO - 1GB sticks of DDR Sdram?

[DDR Sdram at 333MHz {PC2700}, or DDR Sdram at 400MegaHertz?
{PC3200}

1) If the ram memory modules that you are installing, are larger than the ones already installed, install the 1GB ram modules in DIMM 1, and DIMM 2, ram memory slots.

DIMM 1 is Slot 1.
Slot is the ram memory slot that is closest to the Processor.
The Processor reads Slot 1, First.

DIMM 1, and DIMM 2, (Slot 1 and Slot 2), are a matched pair of ram memory slots.
They are in the same Channel.
