Question about Yamaha Xv 250 Virago S Motorcycles

Engine stumbles coming off the idle (1996 250 Virago). A preliminary twist of throttle overcomes the problem, but should not be necessary. This occurs even when in gear & moving.

Several different factors can cause the stumble you talk about. It could be one thing or a combination of things. First buy a new pair of spark plugs and a new pair of spark plug caps. You can get NGK brand spark plug caps for about $5 each and they are the same caps Yamaha will charge $28 for. This should address any issues with poor idle or take off from electrical issues.
Next, an air leak or dirty carburetor could be the cause of a bad hesitation. There is a vacuum piston in the carburetor. If the diaphragm is stretched of damaged (cracks or holes) or if the actual sliding surface of the carburetor piston and piston cylinder surface is dirty or sticky you will have acceleration issues. Carefully unscrew the top if the carburetor and remove it noting the order of the spring and sealing o-rings. Gently peel off the diaphragm and pull the piston out. Clean the piston and the carburetor mating surfaces being careful not to get carburetor cleaning solution on the rubber parts. Inspect the rubber diaphragm for damage and replace the assembly if necessary(about $135). Consider removing the carburetor, disassembling it completely and shooting carburetor cleaner through and the jets and main body passageways.
Finally, age may be a factor on the intake manifold . Unbolt the manifold from the heads and carefully inspect the rubber boot that seals the carburetor to the manifold. Replace the manifold if damaged (about $90). When installing the manifold back on to the cycle use NEW o-rings to address any air leak issues between the heads and manifold. Be sure to inspect all the tubes and plastic T fittings for cracks or damage and replace any damaged parts..
Any one of the these items or the combination of all of them is probably the cause of your hesitation.

Is that a quad? On the side of the carb is the idle screw' when engine is running twist it lady slowly till engine stumbles slightly and twist slowly back to the right till engine stumbles you should go by ear and find the middle medium in the revs that's how u find idle

1998 Durango will not idle


Check A.I.S./I.A.C. motor on throttle body. Known by both names, Automatic idle speed motor (AIS) Idle Air control (IAC) . Usually mounted on side of throttle body, with 2 or 3 torx screws and it's job is to adjust idle at all times as necessary, such as when AC on, turning, etc when extra load on engine, it will increase idle as needed to overcome the load and maintain proper idle speed. You can often remove the motor and clean pintle (pointed end that goes inside throttle body) with throttle body spray cleaner as well as spray inside the port (hole) that it comes out of. Sometimes this will cure the problem for quite a while, but if only for a short time, and it happens again, replace it.

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Failed ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Air/fuel mixture screw improperly adjusted.
10. Accelerator pump damaged or not working.
11. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
12. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
13. Fuel tank empty.
14. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
15. A failed fuel pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.
16. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
17. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.

Stumble off idle


Stumble off idle,you have a misfire at idle the ignition system is of concern this will include plug wires sparkplugs cap and rotor,

Idling engine dies with even slight throttle twist.

The engine on my 250 virago does not idle back


Hi, Atvnorton and the usual suspects are:
1. Throttle cables improperly adjusted or pinched.
2. Idle adjusting screw needs to be backed off.
4. Air fuel mixture adjusted too lean start with 2 full turns.
5. Intake system air leak.
6. Fast idle choke ramp is not releasing.
7. Broken throttle return spring.
8. Damaged diaphragm or slide.
9. Faulty MAP, TPS, ATS, O2, sensors or wiring/connector

I have a 1981 Yamaha Virago and its running ok but when it idles it stumbles and wants to die if I dont stay on the throttle .


that could be several things.
1. your idle is too low, try adjusting it
2. your carbs are dirty, try cleaning it
3. even without cleaning your carbs, try running half of a can of seafoam with your fuel. that could clean them enough to fix the problem.
4. check the sparkplugs

How do i adjust the idle on my 1995 yamaha virago 1100 cc motorcycle?


On most bikes and four wheelers, this is done by a throttle stop. the position of the stop is usually adjusted by a screw. Remove the tank. turn throttle and see what moves by the carb/ injectors. When you return throttle to idle, the moving piece will come to rest on the throttle stop. You can now adjust its position by turning that screw.

Problem while driving 1987 jeep cherokee


Your engine is stumbling "off idle" - as it switches from idle to throttle control. The idle air motor regulates the air flow and engine speed at idle. If the idle is smooth but the stumble occurs just as the throttle is pressed this isn't the problem, The MAP sensor is mounted in the middle of the firewall behind the engine just below the hood. It has to sense the manifold vacuum drop when the throttle is opened. This my first suspect. Second would be the fuel pressure regulator. If it runs O.K. after you get it going, this is a weak suspect unless it loses power when pulling. A bad fuel pump, again low fuel pressure. Just like the squirt from the accelerator pump in the carburetor days, the injectors have to deliver a good stiff shot of fuel when the throttle opens to keep the engine from stumbling. The MAP sensor will tell the ECM a squirt is needed but the fuel system has to have the pressure to deliver.

You should measure the combustion ratio.Maybe piston rings failed.
