Ihave a 1979 1000cc sporty with a as supper e shorty carb that was revolt last winter it was running fine till last month it's been back fireing from the exhaust pipes and air filter the plugs are good...

Backfiring out of the exhaust pipes usually indicates an ignition problem. What happens is that the fuel air mixture in the cylinder is not burned and is exhausted into the exhaust pipes. The next time the cylinder fires and the exhaust valves open and allows the residual flame to exhaust into the pipe, it ignites the unburned fuel in the pipe from the previous misfire. What kind of igniton system is on the bike. And, spark plugs will foul within minutes in an Ironhead Sporty if the mixture is too rich. Your super "E" is still a quite large carburetor for that engine. It should have a #26.5 slow jet and a #66 main jet. Make sure that your accelerator pump is not adjusted to put too much fuel in the cylinder when you open the throttle. Go to S&S's tech site and download files 51-1012 and 51-1013. This will tell you everything you need to know about your carb. http://www.sscycle.com/instructions/instructionslist.php?x_cat=24 If you are running open drag pipes on your Ironhead, you don't have enough backpressure on the exhaust system and you've probably got a flat spot at about 55-60 mph. If so, look on the backside of the exit end of the pipes. There may be a hole in the pipe for the bolt to hold the baffles in the pipe. If this hole is open, install a 1/4" bolt that is 1 1/4" long in the pipe with three nuts on the bolt on the inside of the pipe. Put one of these bolts in each pipe. This will give you just enough backpressure to almost eliminate the flat spot and the bike will perform much better. Due to the hemispherical design of the heads, the Ironhead must have some backpressure. I hope this helps.

Good Luck and Ride Safe

2001 jetta wont rev over 3000 rpms

Please take a code check , it is possible that the timing is incorrect or the fuel pressure is offset.
Make sure that the vehicle had undergone the regular check ups in the said mileage clocked. If not you must attend to the company specified routine service schedule.
Engine oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, timing belts, fuel pressure, code checks, etc..,.

What gap are the plugs supposed to have ?

Depends on which spark plugs you're running and the year model of your Sportster. Please provide this information and I can help you.
Usually, a '79 XLH running H-D #4 plugs the gap is 0.060". Later models run 0.038" to 0.043".

I have a 1967 Harley XLH Sportster. I rebuilt the

"Backfiring" is a pretty broad term depending on where you live. Some people refer to backfiring as popping from the exhaust while others refer to it as the engine spitting through the carburetor.

I'll assume that you're talking about popping out the exhaust pipe. If it does this after you rev the engine and it backfires on the way back down to idle, this is typical of an exhaust system sucking air. The mixture is extremely rich under these circumstances and will not ignite. But, if your exhaust system is sucking air, it combines with the fuel air mixture already there and bring it to an explosive mixture thus the backfire.

You can check you valves but I've always found that if the valves on an Ironhead are too tight, it's extremely difficult to get it started due to the low compression on that cylinder.

Check you ignition timing and points setting. Also, what kind of condition is your mechanical advance in the distributor in? I'm assuming this is an XLH model and not the magneto equipped XLCH.

What type of carburetor is on the engine? Hopefully not the original Tillotson that it came with. If it's an S&S, the low jet should be a 28 and the main jet a 66 to 70.

Hello:

From your Description it Sounds like the Exhaust is Restricted or the "H" Mixture Screw Resuires Adjusting.
>>The Following is a Basic Instruction File for Doing a Diagnostic on the Engine for this Problem. Any Input is Appreciated.
>>**Remove the Muffler and Make Sure the Exhaust Port is Clear.
>>If it is, then Try to Start the engine with the Muffler Off.
>>If it Starts and Runs Properly, then Clean the Spark Arrestor Screen in the Muffler or Replace the Muffler if Required.
>>The Following is the Instruction File for Setting the Air Mixture Screws. Any Input is Appreciated. The Procedure is the Same for 1 or 2 Mixture Screws, Just Use the Instruction File and Skip Over the Section with the Missing Mixture Screw ( Usually the H Mixture Screw).
>>Now Setting the Air Mixture Screws:
>>****Turn the Idle Air (L) and Main Air (H) Mixture Screws In Until SNUG **Do Not Jam** Then Reverse Both Screws 1 1/2 Turns. Set the Throttle Full Open, Start the Engine.
>>Turn the Main Air (H) Mixture Screw Clockwise Until Proper Revs are Obtained. **Carefully Use your Finger and Move the Governor Arm to Rev the Engine (on Chainsaws and Trimmers Use the Trigger to Rev the Engine) Until you Reach Max RPMs (on Chainsaws and Trimmers, the RPMs are Not Set to MAX. Set to Max and then Reverse the Setting Screw 1/4 or 1/2 Turn. If the H Mixture Screw is Set too High; the Engine will be Starved for the Oil in the Gas and Damage the Piston and Jug/Cylinder) and the Engine is Running Proper at Full Throttle Up a Grade and for Chainsaws and Trimmers they Do Not Bog DOwn Under a Load. Occasionally you May have to Turn this Counter Clockwise to Achieve the Proper Revs.**
>>Now Allow the Engine to Idle. Set the Engine Idle Screw (Not Idle Air) so the Engine will Stay Running if Required.
>>Now Set the Idle Air (L) Mixture Screw so there is No Hesitation when Rapidly Throttling from Idle to Full Throttle. Reset the Engine Idle if Required.****
Please, Do Not Hesitate, If I Missed Something or you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance.
Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Be Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
