I have a 2002 Yamaha YZF 600R it sat parked for a few months 2 or 3 and ran fine before but now it starts and idles but wont rev it just shuts off

  • STEVEN ARREGUIN JR Apr 09, 2011

is it possible for me to do this myself easily? it reved for awhile but smoke started coming from around the engine could that be water in the tank? i dont ride very often so i dont know how long the gas has been in there. what do i do with the gas? do i need to tank the tank off?

  • STEVEN ARREGUIN JR Apr 10, 2011

i took the tank off and drained it. it wasnt much i put new gas and fuel injecter cleaner but now it barely idles. i seen another posting from a guy with the same bike that said to touch the exhaust manifold to see if any pipes were cold i touched the one on the far left from seated position it was cold the second one next to it burned my fingers i didnt touch anymore. does that mean anything to you why one would be cold while another is very hot? does that mean that cylinder is not firing? tomorrow i'm taking it more apart to check the air intake my friend suggests that. but i need to take the airbox off to get to the plugs to check the plugs and wires. is there anything i should also look at when i have it apart? is there any way to make it run with the tank off?

  • STEVEN ARREGUIN JR Apr 10, 2011

oh and my bike is fuel injected i believe . i just had new injecters put on in 09 because it sat since 2002

Is your throttle cable hooked up? What do you mean it won't rev? Does it die when you twist the throttle or you get no response at all? If it sat outside and it keeps dying when you try and rev it, then by all means, drain the gas and fill it with fresh gas and a little carb cleaner. The old gas gets gunky and will clog a carb up as well as injectors.

After you drain the gas, clean the plugs before filling the tank and trying the restart. Gas tanks love to collect moisture when setting outside. they are exposed to all the differences in temperature and actually collect codinsate and this gets in the gas as well, water in the gas makes it hard to start and run.

I hope you don't have to take the tank off but you might if you can't get to the fule line that connect the carbs. Is this injected or carburated? Shut the pet **** off and remove the fuel line and drain it into a gas gan. you might need a hose extension to slip over your fuel line to reach that far. You should be able to do this without an issue, but I am going to look a little deeper at your bike and see what I can find out on the construction of the tank and fuel lines. This is not something to worry about too much it should all clear out once we get it going with some fresh gas. If you have a syphon pump you can pump the gas out from the filler cap. Once it gets fresh gas and some cleaneer it may take several tanks to loosen all the gunk up that may have deposited itself in your tank and carb. Can you clean the plugs while your at it this will help, new plugs would even be better and you may have to keep swapping the plugs with clean ones till this is over.

Sometimes ,if a bike has been store up over winter ,,the carbs can get or become very sticky ,this is generally cause by damp or the fuel gets sediment forming in the jets .if your bike is getting stuck on the throttle .,the best thing to do is to strip down and check that the carbs linking arm is not stiff or rusty ,and while you are doing this remove the throttle cables and give then a good soaking in W/D 40 or equivelent and re oil the inner cables ,Cables can be olied using a baloon filled with thin oil and attached to one end using sticky tape and hung up and allow the oil to soak through the inner cable .You can also give the inner cable a push & pull movement to help the oil get right through the cable ,till it comes out the other end

Do you notice any gass coming from the carbs and spilling out? That could have caused the smoke and it also tells me that the floats are gummed and sticking if it is leaking.

If one side is cold and the other hot, then it is not firing on the cold side, which indiactes either a plugged injector or no spark. But my guess is the injector since it may have gummed up from setting. If you take the injector off you can soak it in carb cleaner and flush it out and get it back open. Since you didn't do anything to the bike while it sat then I wouldn't know why it would be a spark issue but it never hurts to take the plugs out and clean them as well.

The fuel pump is in the tank correct? Unless you can run longer wires to the pump and a longer hose to the tank i don't see how to run it without the tank.

This may be a problem with you bike not having the correct amount of fuel when the throttle opens. You will have to inspect the carb. You need to have it cleaned including the jets. The idle jet may be good but the jet for high revs may be dirty. Other than that it could be a fuel filter problem. Check the fuel for debris. Other than that you may need new gas inside. The fuel you are using may have sat there for too long.

it depends on how long it was stock on the station and its was stored. This is just a scenario that do happens but I think it has to do with the carbs and its jets but you need to check it out to be sure.

My yamaha yzf600 sat for 3 years, it will idle but dies when i give it throttle, it has new gas, fuel filter, sprayed carb cleaner in carbs!! new air filter.

You'll need to disassemble your carbs and manually clean the jets, and ensure that if you have CV-type carbs, you can see all the needle holders rising when you roll on the throttle.
