The starter spline plugs into a gear that attaches to the starter gear with a skinny chain. If you pull out the starter the small gear may drop into the bottom of the motor and hang by the chain. I have talked to customers that said they pulled the starter out and the gear stayed in place long enough to put it back in, BUT , if the small gear drops out of place you will have to pull the motor and remove the rear cover to put it back together correctly. It is worth a try to simply pull it out and see if you can put the new/rebuilt starter back in. Just be prepared to yank the motor if the sprocket falls out of place.

How to replace a starter on a honda goldwing 1981

Centerstand the motorcycle, locate the starter under the left cylinders, pull back the rubber cover on the solenoid cable and unbolt the battery cable, take out the two bolts holding the back end of the starter to the block, and pull the starter straight out of the motor. You may have to gently pry the starter out with the help of a screw driver.

What are the steps to change the starter on a 1983 goldwing 1100a aspencade( any tricks?)

first step... do not pull engine...remove battery and starter connections, if you have any skid bars on the left front, remove them. remove shift peg, remove front covers on that side, remove starter bolts, pull starter out, gear will stay with chain inside cover and drop down a bit, don't be scared. If you have bought an aftermarket starter watch that the spines and gears may not match, put the matching gear in the chain inside the case and put some assembly grease to hold it center in case while you install the new starter. It does take some self control but way more easier than pulling engine.

Check the compression before tearing it down - the cylinder with the water will probably come up low.
It's very likely that the head gasket has failed. As a result (or the cause) it's also likely that the head has warped, it'll need skimming before rebuilding the motor

1981 honda goldwing wont start

while trying to start an engine, and only the solenoid clicks, there are these 3 things- no juice from the battery, starter corroded contacts(the big cables) or starter is shot. so first make sure the battery is charged, next make sure the cable mounts from battery to starter are clean(no rust), if that is all good and doesnt start , remove starter and have it tested.
