Question about 2003 Yamaha YZ 450 F

3 Answers

I have a 2003 yz 450f, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear are strong as hell, work great....but, when i hit 4th gear it feels like i am engauging and disengauging the clutch....gears are in great shape. could the neutral switch have anything to do with it? why would it only do that in 4th. the bike is a one kick start always

I dont usually post when i find forums like this... Dennis Weid was closest to correct in most of his statement.. It is most certainly your clutch slipping. as the transmission gears, shift forks, shift drum, and shift detent would be showing DEFINATE signs or sounds of failure if they were going away. The clutch system is similarly built to the disc brake system. The friction plates in the clutch basket are like brake pads where the steel plates serve the function of a brake disc, constantly engaging and disengaging eachother to lock the inner and outer clutch basket together or let them freewheel when the clutch lever is pulled. putting extra washers and removing material from either friction or steel plates is a big no-no... they depend on their thickness to hold and disperse a lot of heat into the geargase oil, under a very demanding frictional load. use a piece of glass or a mirror as a flat surface and the smallest feeler guage you have on each degreased steel plate to check for warpage, and replace AS A SET if there's any warpage or blueish-purple discoloring at all. As for the friction plates, measure the thickness with a caliper or micrometer. There is a minimum thickness spec for either style plate in your service manual. Use it and abide by it.. VERBATIM. also check the inner-to-outter clutch hub for any play(common) while you have all the plates out, otherwise your wasting your efforts. clutch kits are inexpensive, but if your clutch wears completely out and grenades in your 4-stroke... you can bet Its total rebuild time. most overhauls i do cost near or over bluebook just in parts!!! hope this helps. - Mike Reasy, Certified Harley davidson, Buell, V-rod, Dynojet, Yamaha Technician. the neutral switch changes the ignition sequence when it in neutral, and there is no light...it is a yz450f....no lights.... tranny and shift forks are ok thats why im asking...cant figure it out. would anything change the ignition firing sequence or ignition timing??

sorry about the light idea , but often questions are asked about similar models.

the ignition timing changes with the TPS(throttle position sensor)
youve lost me with the ignition sequence though, a single cylnder has only one sequence,
I have never seen a switch to change ignition in neutral, and cant think why it would be necessary
Sorry again I dont think I can help, if it feels like the clutch slipping, that may be the answer, the clutch slip will appear in the higher gears

Have you thought of the clutch itself. Normally a vehicle will have normal pulling power in the lower gears, but if the clutch is worn, it will start playing up in the higher gears. Try putting the bike in 4th. gear and letting out the clutch. The engine will be inclined to carry on running and not cut out if the clutch is slipping, either due to worn plates or weak springs.

No matter what you say you are 100% describing a slipping clutch, remember top gear is where the clutch is under the most load. If you had any kind of engine related issue it would do it in all gears. I have taken many clutches out of bikes that were slipping badly in top gear under a load and they looked fine, what I did to fix the problem was put washers under the clutch basket cover springs to add more spring pressure to the springson the clutch plates, I used regular cheap hardware store washers, I also sanded all the friction plates and steels to remove any glaze, this solved the problem in every single bike I've worked on for the problem of clutch slippage in top gear when the clutch disks looked fine. I don't recommend after market heavier springs, they are way to stiff on the pull pressure and you will quickly have a sore cramped hand from pulling the lever.

Hi, Kanskibingham for this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Yamaha, despair not, for a mere $0 you can download another one. Only runs in 1st and 2nd gear and reverse.

This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line
, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmission is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the under hood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.

No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

4L 60E - 2001 k1500 will not shift into 3-4. Oil is not burn't and stifts great into1-2

  • No 3rd or 4th gear: “3-4” clutches are worn out. R&R. The car is safe to drive (in 2) until you can get it fixed.
  • Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmission is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the under hood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. • No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : Shift A solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.
Check to see if your transmission is in the limp mode, which would only give you 2nd, 3rd and reverse gears. No 1st or 4th gear.
