Question about 2004 Yamaha YZ 450 F

2 Answers

I have a 2003 yz 450f, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear are strong as hell, work great....but, when i hit 4th gear it feels like i am engauging and disengauging the clutch....gears are in great shape. could the neutral switch have anything to do with it? why would it only do that in 4th. the bike is a one kick start always.

i can snap the front tire off the ground in the first 3 gears...i will check the basket, but the plates are new...how long do i have before i have to except this solution?

  • scott horn Apr 09, 2011

between the clutch basket cover and the springs? would mineral spirits remove the glaze also?

  • scott horn Apr 09, 2011

i do have a hinson clutch basket, and it has 5 springs, not 4 like alot of the older models...your advice seems sound., the bogging is a carb issue that i will be attending to today. the washers wont affect the balance at all will it?

  • scott horn Apr 10, 2011

i know....carb is done, i broke'er down today and blew all ports.....had some muck in there (no clue)...but, i mic'd all the friction plates, and clutch plates every one is below exceptable spec. below 1.1mm 1.1is the lowest limit. and for the clutch friction plate, lowest spec limit is 1.93mm...and im way below that....and springs limit is 1.92 inches...and im way below that. i have been working with my 17 year old son on fixing our bikes for a year now. his measurements were wrong, as i found out today. i took his word at face value and i didnt check until today....my fault, but i will make sure you get your ching, buy excepting. thanks for your time, i guess i just should have done it my self the first time. thanks again bud.

  • scott horn Apr 10, 2011

i mic'd all the plate, clutch plates are all below 1.1mm, 1.1mm is the lowes exceptable spec...friction plates are all below spec. and the springs are all below 1.95 inches....well below spec. i allowed my kid to check them and took his results at face value . i should have done it myself the first time. and i fixed my carb issue yesterday, broke'er down, blew out all the ports, it had some deposits clogging up the works...but, thanks for your time, i will accept your solution so you get payed......i thought it was the clutch at first, but my son said it wass all midrange spec. (ha! teenagers)

No matter what you say you are 100% describing a slipping clutch, remember top gear is where the clutch is under the most load. If you had any kind of engine related issue it would do it in all gears. I have taken many clutches out of bikes that were slipping badly in top gear under a load and they looked fine, what I did to fix the problem was put washers under the clutch basket cover springs to add more spring pressure to the springson the clutch plates, I used regular cheap hardware store washers, I also sanded all the friction plates and steels to remove any glaze, this solved the problem in every single bike I've worked on for the problem of clutch slippage in top gear when the clutch disks looked fine. I don't recommend after market heavier springs, they are way to stiff on the pull pressure and you will quickly have a sore cramped hand from pulling the lever.

My solution doesn't refer to the clutch disks, it refers to the clamping springs in the clutch basket cover being weak, think of it this way, a new clutch in a car with a worn out pressure plate, the clutch will slip no matter the fact the disk is new, it is the clamping pressure brought to bear by the springs in the cover that make the clutch plates grip and not slip. I have worked on Japanese bikes my whole life since the first Honda scooters of the early 1960's and the clutches of many Japanese bikes have always been a weak link. In any event you decide whether to accept or reject my advice. Please re-read my proposed solution again, I think you did really didn't see what I was talking about as far as the clutch goes. Thanks

Use sand paper medium grit and clean with carburetor cleaner. The washers will not affect balance. If you had a carburator problem it should act up in all gears. You must realize that without a "Test" ride this is very hard to diagnose!

Have you thought of the clutch itself. Normally a vehicle will have normal pulling power in the lower gears, but if the clutch is worn, it will start playing up in the higher gears. Try putting the bike in 4th. gear and letting out the clutch. The engine will be inclined to carry on running and not cut out if the clutch is slipping, either due to worn plates or weak springs.

Only runs in 1st and 2nd gear and reverse.

This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line
, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmission is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the under hood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.

No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

4L 60E - 2001 k1500 will not shift into 3-4. Oil is not burn't and stifts great into1-2

  • No 3rd or 4th gear: “3-4” clutches are worn out. R&R. The car is safe to drive (in 2) until you can get it fixed.
  • Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmission is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the under hood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. • No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : Shift A solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.
Check to see if your transmission is in the limp mode, which would only give you 2nd, 3rd and reverse gears. No 1st or 4th gear.

Check that the OD solenoid on the torque converter is good still. When the R4 wont go into OD you have no more gears than 1st an 2nd. If the OD clutch drum was relaced if it was burnt, that will make a problem also. You have to have OD in order for these babies to work right.
