Question about 2001 BMW R 1100 RT (ABS)

2 Answers

My 2002 BMW R1100S (55,000kms) has a fault with the ABS. The warning lights are on with 4 flashes per sec indicating a fault with the ABS circuit. The rear brake has only residual breaking most of the time and the front brakes about 50% of the time. I took it to a BMW dealer who diagnosed it as Error code 4330 - Pressure in front wheel circuit too high and 4430 - Pressure in rear circuit too high. Test Result- The offset values of the internal pressure sensors are outside the specified setpoint values. Their fix is a new ABS unit for $4,000 Aust. Can these units be overhauled? because we are talking around 50% of the bike's value. Also can the bike be changed back to Non ABS by bypassing the unit. These bikes came out with a non ABS option yet BMW dealer tells me it can't be done economically. Surely it shouldn't be that difficult. Some plumbing etc. I would be grateful for any advice

More information on doing away with the ABS would be grateful. If I spend a lot of money on even a second hand unit who's to say that's not going to give trouble at some stage. I can live without ABS & servo assistance as I'm quite used to ordinary brakes as found on my BMW R90S.

No, they cannot be overhauled, they are sealed units. The best solution is to get a second hand unit.
But you can also get rid of the ABS by removing the unit and running new stainless steel braided brake lines like
http://www.spieglerusa.com/brakes/cycle-brake-line-kits.html
This will cost you less than $250 for the lines plus 6 hours of labor at your local shop - or you could do it yourself.

It's possible to remove the ABS unit and repair it at a specialized workshop, but this operation is very difficult and needs special equipment and trained people.
I suggest you to find a second hand ABS unit in good condition, and replace it on your bike. Change also the brake fluid and bleed the ABS unit & brake installation. The ABS system is a very good brake security device, and I recommend you to keep it on your bike.

ABS light comes on... but no noticble degradation in operation etc.

Most likely a wheel speed sensor, hopefully... The only thing that will change when the ABS light is on is that the ABS will not function as long as the indicator is on. I hope this info helps.

When the airbag system is in functioning condition, the airbag warning light will remain on for about 7 seconds and go out when the ignition switch is set to ON .

If there is any malfunction, the airbag warning light will either stay on or off continuously. In such cases, perform on-board diagnostic in accordance with the specified procedure to determine trouble codes.

  1. Turn ignition switch ON (with engine OFF ).

  1. Connect DIAG. terminal to No.2 terminal of diagnosis connector located inside lower cover.
  2. Check in accordance with the trouble code indicated by the AIRBAG warning light, and record the trouble codes.
  3. Turn the ignition switch "OFF " and remove the DIAG. terminal from No.2 terminal of diagnosis connector.

HOW TO READ TROUBLE CODES
The ABS lamp flashes a code corresponding to the faulty parts.

The long segment (1.2 secs on) indicates a "ten", and the short segment (0.3 secs on) indicates a "one".

NOTE: This is the only information provided by the manufacturer for clearing diagnostic trouble codes.

CLEAR MEMORY
After eliminating problem as per trouble code, clear memory as follows:

Make sure ignition switch is ON (and engine off). Connect one DIAG. terminal (1) on diagnosis connector (2) terminal No.1.

where warning light is flashing, connect the other DIAG. terminal (3) on terminal No. 2 for at least three seconds . After memory is cleared, normal warning light flashing rate resumes. (Warning light flashes every 0.6 seconds (ON-OFF operation.) Memory cannot be cleared if any problem exists.

After clear memory and then DIAG. terminals (1) and (3), extract from diagnosis connector (2)

Have replaced ABS module on bmw 525 E39 and ABS now ok, but the ASC lamp will not go off on the dash and fault code 23 (incorrect coding) will not clear from system? Everyone told us the ABS ecu does not...

ABS/ASC module is faulty
CLASSIC ABS FAILURE SYMPTOMS:
- Most of the time, the problem is the ABS module or one of the 4 wheel speed sensors (& sometimes the brake pressure sensor)
- In my 2002 BMW E39 DSC, three orange (warning) cluster display lights lit, ABS, Brake, & DSC
- The 3 warning lights reset when the ignition is turned off, only to repeatedly reappear within minutes of normal driving
- The fault is often intermittent leading you to falsely believe you've resolved the problem (proper diagnosis is important)
- Sometimes the fault only appears when the engine is hot; other times only at speeds over 40 mph
- Carsoft may erroneously show a rear speed sensor failure; but just replacing the speed sensor may make no difference.
- All the work is in correct diagnosis of the problem; parts replacement is trivial (from 1 to six bolts in a few minutes)
- Hence, this BMW E39 ABS 3-warning light DIY will concentrate on understanding and diagnosis of the problem
