Question about 1990 Honda VT 1100 C Shadow

2 Answers

1993 Shadow 1100 all electrical power shuts off when it is leaned to the left side with the side stand up in neutral or in gear. Putting the bike upright and shaking it power returns. This problem is intermitant. I was told the side stand switch was bad. I disconnected the switch and wired the wires to each other the problem persists.

IT may just be wiring issues. Inspect the visible wires for loose connections or bad wires, those whose insulation need replacing. You may have to inspect the terminal of the battery or the battery itself. The batter is in the seat area behind the gas tank. Most honda motorbikes has panels that slide to get to the actual battery.

The power cables on the battery may be loose or needs replacement and looses contact when the motor shifts. If you are not using a dry battery, or the ones similar to cars or only smaller, check for the fluid level. It may be in such as way that there is almost no water on one side when the bike tilts.

1984yamaha virago 1000. with the bike running, when I try to shift from neutral to first gear the bike stalls. I think it has something to do with the electrical.. Help!

If you are at idle, in neutral, with the clutch lever pulled all the way in, and you shift into gear and the engine dies, it is likely the switch at the clutch lever. When they fail the bike does not get the signal that the clutch is disengaged and it is safe to shift into gear. Have that switch checked. Some bikes also have a side stand switch, make sure your side stand is always up before putting you bike into gear.

1993 Honda VT 1100 C Shadow gets hot quits running

Hi, D and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery must have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
2. Faulty alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Faulty main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Faulty system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Faulty ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Faulty CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Faulty neutral, side stand or clutch lever safety switch.
10. Fuel tank empty
11. Fuel tank contaminated with ethanol sludge.
12. Water or dirt in the fuel system, or clogged filter.
13. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
14. Faulty fuel pump.
15. Faulty pressure regulator.
16. Faulty or clogged fuel injectors.
17. Lean angle switch is faulty or needs adjustment.

I can crank bike in neutral runs fine but when i put it in gear motor shuts down acts like it locks up

It sounds like your kick stand switch is stuck. There is a switch that senses if the kickstand is up or down and the plunger can get stuck. This is likely the problem.

I have a 2004 VT750C shadow Areo I did a side stand ignition cut-off check. start engine, pull clutch lever in. shift transmission into gear. lower the side stand all way down. The engine stopped as...

as a safety thing most bikes that I have seen will not start if in gear and the kickstand is down. Make sure it is in neutral and try to start if that doesnt work the switch at the kickstand may have gotten stuck in position to where it still thinks that the kickstand is down.

2001 Honda Shadow 1100, I put the kickstand down while on slight grade, front brake on,clutch pulled on and now it will not start. riddle me this.

You may be low on fuel, and none is reaching the fuel valve, but a more likely answer is that the bike may not be properly registering that it's in neutral.
There's a safety that kills the engine if it's in gear and the side stand is down.
Triple check the neutral (put it in gear and back to neutral).
Check the side stand and clutch safety switches.

Engine shuts off when put in gear, could by kickstand switch, but could the clutch need bleeding?

Hi
Unlikely that the clutch needs bleeding unless she lurches forward when she dies
It will be side-stand, clutch or neutral lockout switches or the relay

Runs without plugwires on shuts off when you put it in gear

Your cycle runs when you pull off one spark plug wire per cylinder. There are two spark plugs per cylinder and you did not remove both . Therefore you still have one spark plug on each cylinder firing to run the machine. Your motorcycle is also equipped with a side stand safety switch. Your bike will run on the side stand . But, if you put the bike in gear with the side stand down it is designed to turn off the motor. This is so you do not drive away with the stand down and loose control of the motorcycle on your first left hand turn. Get in the habit of putting your side stand up before putting the bike in gear and your problem is solved. Read your owners manual.
